Whilst most industries start to look at a wind down for the summer break, the recreational boating industry mostly kicks on providing the products and services to ensure those that love the lifestyle we promote can enjoy their time on the water. Christmas is just over six weeks away with what will be a busy spell for many of us. Best wishes to all for a prosperous, safe, and happy run to the end of the year. I firmly believe that there are many lessons to be had from what we read. This month’s Marine Rescue NSW activity data has a few. The MR crew say that October was the Service’s busiest ever start to a boating season. There are many variables at play here, and whilst I’m no expert, I’m sure that volatile weather not only increased the opportunity for boating, but also the sudden weather changes may have been the cause of some of the problems. They say that volunteers across the state were involved in a record 386 search and rescue missions. There were 101 emergencies including 7 MAYDAY calls. In total 818 people were safely returned to shore. The stat to understand that can be a real lesson is that 57% of calls for assistance received by Marine Rescue NSW volunteers in October were for mechanical or fuel issues. Whichever way you want to look at it, we must be grateful for our Rescue Volunteers. This week we also bring you news from the Marine Rescue Implementation Program in Queensland, and information and pics from a Search & Rescue exercise at Wirrina in South Australia. We hope you enjoy these and all the stories in this week’s eNews, as well as those that didn’t make it into this edition that can be read on the website. Magnetron vs. Solid-state Radar: What’s the Difference?Marine radar is a critical navigational tool that provides boaters with situational awareness when on the water. Radars work by sending out electromagnetic radio waves that travel invisibly at the speed of light until they hit a target, whether that’s an object, a storm cell or landform, at which point they reflect back toward the radar — effectively letting the boater know something’s out there and how far away it is.
