As we step into Makuru, a season of renewal, cool rains and growth, we’re excited to share new initiatives, inspiring community stories and practical ways to bring nature home this winter. From local council action to native gardening tips, there’s something here for every budding rewilding champion.
BRINGING NATURE BACK: REWILD PARTNERS WITH LOCAL COUNCILS
Growing Together with Local Councils
ReWild Perth has joined forces with six local councils in the South West Corridor Development Foundation Alliance — Cities of Melville, Rockingham, Cockburn, Kwinana, Fremantle, and Town of East Fremantle — to help residents ReWild their gardens, courtyards, verges, and balconies.
Through workshops, talks, and handy resources, this partnership empowers our communities to use local plants and habitat structures to support native wildlife.

Did you know many native plants thrive in pots? From Everlastings to Hakea and Grevillea, you can create a vibrant mini habitat right on your balcony, patio or doorstep. These compact native gardens not only add colour and life to small spaces, but also offer valuable food and shelter for birds, bees and other local wildlife.

"We like to watch the way the garden changes with the seasons, there is always something new to see. We have had native orchids and ghost mushrooms appear naturally. My daughter and I like making native flower bouquets and doing watercolour paintings of the flowers. We plant annuals such as everlastings and kangaroo paws each year for a colourful spring display, and are always trying to squeeze in a new plant!"

BLUEBERRY LILY
Scientific name: Dianella revoluta
Noongar name: Mangard
The Blueberry Lily is a hardy, drought-tolerant native plant known for its striking purple-blue flowers and vibrant berries, it provides food for birds, insects and other wildlife. This clumping perennial is easy to grow, tolerates a range of soils, and adds colour and texture to gardens year-round.

Tawny Frogmouth
Scientific name: Podargus strigoides
Noongar name: Kambany
The Tawny Frogmouth is a master of camouflage and often mistaken for an owl, though it is more closely related to nightjars. Commonly found across Perth and much of Australia, this nocturnal bird roosts motionless during the day, blending perfectly with tree branches. At night, it hunts insects and small prey, playing an important role in controlling pest populations.
