Today’s ‘Yesterday’s Australia’ segment is thanks to member @mikefrig, who shared a memory of his school days in the 1950s: ‘In primary school, we marched around the quadrangle every Monday morning. We saluted the flag and sang God Save the Queen. This became very real for me in 1953 because when I was 10, Queen Elizabeth visited Adelaide, and we all went to Wayville Showgrounds to see her! We each received a small New Testament bible as a memento.’
Oh my goodness, how different school was back then! It’s hard to believe that just a few generations ago, children were singing God Save the Queen in the morning assembly! It’s also amazing to think that you got to see the Queen in person – what a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Thank you for sharing, @mikefrig!
