Supporting next generation of horticulture researchers

The Western Australian Government is advancing horticulture research in WA with a new post graduate scholarship named in honour of the renowned breeder of the Pink Lady apple. The John Cripps Horticulture Scholarship will provide the successful candidate with $150,000 to undertake a full time Doctorate or $100,000 for a Masters degree.

The biennial scholarship will encourage industry-focused research projects and overcome constraints to horticulture production. Study can be undertaken at any WA university and will strengthen research collaboration between government, academia and industry.

The scholarship will be funded by royalties from horticulture varieties developed by the state, including those from Cripps Pink and Cripps Red apples – commonly known as Pink Lady, Sundowner and Bravo.

The research will help WA's vast $1.49 billion horticulture industry to continue to expand and diversify, from the Kimberley to the South Coast.

For more information, and to submit a scholarship application, please visit the John Cripps Horticulture Scholarship website. More...

AEGIC oat noodles and oat 'rice' destined for supermarket shelves

Oat noodles and oat ‘rice’ developed by the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) are destined for supermarket shelves, with a Western Australian based company set to begin producing the innovative foods.

AEGIC’s oat scientists developed manufacturing processes for 100% whole grain noodles and a ‘rice’ product that can be eaten like regular rice. Made from Australian oats, which are high in beta-glucan, the products offer superior nutritional benefits.

AEGIC has partnered with WA-based company My PlantCo to take the products to market and help move oats beyond the breakfast table to becoming an option for lunch, dinner and snacks.

My PlantCo will use the innovative oat processing methods and “know-how” developed by AEGIC to produce healthy, high-quality oat products under its Real Oats subsidiary. The products will be manufactured in WA for domestic consumers, as well as export markets.

AEGIC’s research was supported by the WA Government through the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. AEGIC is an initiative of the WA Government and Grains Australia. More...

IMF: Global recovery remains slow

Global growth will remain slow at 3.0% in 2023 and 2.9% in 2024, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said in its latest Global Economic Outlook.

The growth forecast is the lowest in decades as the global economy continues to recover from multiple shocks and the cost-of-living crisis.

The IMF says divergent growth prospects across the world’s regions pose a challenge to returning to pre-pandemic output trends.

Despite signs of resilience earlier in 2023, the impact of policy tightening to reduce inflation is expected to cool economic activity going forward. More...
