Partner Spotlight: Kent

Kent is a global, full service consulting, engineering and projects company focussed on designing, building and maintaining assets that power the world and make it future ready for tomorrow.  Kent was formed in 2021 through Kentech’s acquisition of SNC-Lavalin’s global Oil & Gas business, and their previous acquisitions of the former Atkins Oil & Gas (Consulting) business, Kentz and Houston Offshore Engineering.

Kent’s specialist engineering & consulting business covers all phases of decommissioning from initial planning to engineering / risk assessments for cutting and heavy lift phases to onshore recycling.

Recently completed decommissioning scopes within the APAC region have included:

  • Jacket footings and subsea pipeline degradation study.
  • Full EPRD definition scope for removing multiple platforms in Australian waters on behalf of a large Offshore Installation Contractor.
  • Load-in, demolition, and disposal methodology, cost estimates, and schedules for multiple platforms.
  • WA Dismantling Hub Study for CODA.
  • Suspension of operations methodology development for multiple platforms.

Kent's APAC team is supported by their UK offices which have a long track record supporting North Sea decommissioning projects from the feasibility studies through to acting as the owner’s engineer.

For more information on Kent, visit their website.

Skills Review for the Australian Oil & Gas Decommissioning Industry awarded

CODA with the support of the Western Australian Government has taken a significant step forward in addressing the challenge of decommissioning skills gaps by initiating the delivery of a national skills review study. Deloitte, a leading professional services organisation, has been appointed to conduct the study.

Challenges and solutions in well abandonment planning

As the industry evolves, past decisions and actions are presenting unique challenges in planning well abandonments. In this webinar, Managing Director and CEO of Labrador Chris Wilson will present a recent abandonment study that Labrador performed, and share real-life examples of the complexities and impacts faced so that current well construction projects can avoid the same mistakes.

NDRI (National Decommissioning Research Initiative) update

The NDRI continues to do important research to better understand the impacts of decommissioning oil and gas structures on the Australian marine environment.

Work scopes under development

Research Program: Potential impact of decommissioning O&G structures on life in the marine environment.

Under Australian law, companies are mandated to thoroughly investigate the complete removal of all oil and gas structures once they reach the end of their productive life. However, over time, these structures can foster the growth of significant marine ecosystems, supporting diverse communities, including fish and corals.

The NDRI (National Decommissioning Research Initiative) aims to enhance understanding and collaboration between industry, government, and the community regarding the implications of leaving or removing such facilities from the ocean.

Phase 2

Working together with research leaders and in consultation with industry regulators, the next research phase of the NDRI is currently looking at the following topics:

  • Investigate the Impact of polymer degradation contaminants, with a focus on microplastic, on the marine environment.
  • Develop scientific-based in-situ measurement technologies for contaminants (What is present and at what levels?)

We are already working with leading research organisations; AIMS and ANSTO and hope to publish our findings over the next 12-24 months.

New research

We've added a new paper to our research library - Offshore decommissioning horizon scan: Research priorities to support decision-making activities for oil and gas infrastructure

Highlights of this paper include:

  • Decommissioning is imminent for thousands of ocean-based oil and gas structures.
  • Removal of these structures may not be ‘best case’ for the environment or society.
  • Transdisciplinary knowledge is required to provide evidence for decision-making.
  • This expert-informed horizon scan provides a consensus on priority research required.
  • Addressing these priorities will require the dismantling of discipline/sector silos.

Be sure to visit our frequently updated research library to view this and other important environmental and marine research related to decommissioning.
