This week: New helpful resources, free digital art CPD from Adobe, student-focussed events and plenty of job vacancies YOUR FORTNIGHTLY NSEAD UPDATEA message of solidarity and unity On Saturday NSEAD members met in London under the NSEAD banner. Members, families, children, educators marching together, with one clear message: We will not tolerate racism in our workplaces and communities. Ten thousand marched in London, 2,000 in Glasgow and 700 in Cardiff, in a show of solidarity. The marches were organised by Stand up to Racism, and supported by the TUC. It was a great day – the sun shone, and it was fantastic to meet up with some of our fantastic NSEAD family. We were reminded that gathering together isn’t just a public show of strength, it gives us strength. When we draw together in this way, our values, our humanity is validated – and we know that we can stand up to racism, discrimination and hatred. This week the TUC Unions have written to the Government demanding a date for an employment bill in the wake of the P&O scandal. We cannot accept the appalling way that these workers have been treated, and NSEAD are proud to sign this letter on behalf of our members. As members of the TUC, we are part of a movement of 5.5 million workers. When we stand up for one, we stand up for all. United, we can make a difference. Michele Gregson General Secretary About last Saturday...We want to say a big THANK YOU to all members, friends and families that joined us last Saturday under the NSEAD banner at the Stand up to Racism march. Thank you also to those that couldn't be there, but supported us on social media and behind the scenes. It was a peaceful and hopeful protest and we felt proud to represent our members and show NSEAD's solidarity with those that experience racism in any form. We hope to meet even more of you at future events – keep your eye on the newsletter for details. NSEAD response to the Inclusive Britain report A new report Inclusive Britain: Government response to the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities has been published. The Report lists 71 measures described as being part of the government’s new 'Inclusive Britain action plan'. In response to the Report, Marlene Wylie, NSEAD President Elect said: ‘Whilst many of the recommendations are welcome, I am in many respects still exasperated by the lack of detail around funding for example for the curriculum resource development. How can we feel confident that this report will bring about the urgent reforms that we need to see in anti-racist art education if funding is not made available through the government? This action would most definitely demonstrate their drive and commitment to see an Inclusive Britain. Sadly here, it is lacking.’ NSEAD National Conference 2022Art Education: Leading TogetherSupporting your career, inspiring every learner, protecting our subject Strategic, transformational, and visionary leadership – together we can lead change for our subject, our learners and each other.

New: Guidance for broaching 'Sensitive Issues' in schoolsNSEAD supports members that wish to introduce topics that may be issue-based or sensitive into their curriculum offer. We believe that teachers are best placed to know and understand what benefits the students they teach and what the curriculum should offer. We understand that in some instances there may be concern expressed by school leaders, parents, carers and school governors to new proposals that are potentially sensitive. In response to this, we have developed a toolkit to aid our members with explaining the rationale, thinking and planning behind proposals of this nature. Just sign into the website and then click here to view or download the documents. Resources to support you in an Ofsted deep diveWe often see posts in our Facebook groups from teachers asking for support with Ofsted deep dives. NSEAD has some excellent guidance and questionnaires to support subject leads from Key Stage 1 to 4, to help prepare for these inspections. Just sign into the website and then click here to view or download the documents. No levelling up without equity, funding or arts educationThe Government's new Levelling Up policy document has some worthy rhetoric – describing the UK as having a 'vibrantly creative arts sector’ and proposing a 'Renaissance'. However, the Paper completely fails to mention any investment in arts education or the need to feed the talent pipeline for the creative sector, across all types of schools and socio-economic groups.
A royally great resource for the Queen's Platinum JubileeTake a look at how Melrose Junior School created large-scale portraits of the Royal Family using Mod Roc. Using paintings and photographs, students worked collaboratively in small groups, choosing and matching fabric, braid, wool and other materials to produce their collage king or queen.
Resource: An art class activity for improving wellbeingIn this short article, Sarah Meader, teacher of art and design at St Aidan’s Church of England High School, Harrogate, asks the question 'What creates good mindfulness and an atmosphere of wellbeing?' She discovered with her pupils that doodling offered much needed opportunities for down time, creative experimentation as well as a safe space to non-verbally express thoughts and feelings.
