Principal's message

Kia ora e te whānau,

We hope you have had an enjoyable and relaxing Easter break and enjoyed the company of your young adults during the holiday. We were very happy to see all the familiar faces when our students returned on Wednesday and also to meet new students who have enrolled at Trident.

Routines

Students thrive in an environment that provides familiar and clear routines and structures. Student mental health and academic, sporting, and cultural success are enhanced through establishing and maintaining routines and boundaries.

So, what does this look like at Trident as we return to term 2?

  • Students attend school every day and attend every lesson.
  • Students arrive punctually for whānau time at 8:40 am.
  • Students are in full school uniform with a warm school fleece, shell jacket, or a plain black raincoat.
  • Students have their Chromebooks with them and fully charged.
  • Students move promptly from class to class to arrive on time for learning each period.
  • Students remain on task through to the end of the period.
  • Students use the toilet and take water breaks before school, at interval and at lunchtime, and remain in class as much as possible during lesson time.
  • Students are confident of their access to their Google Classrooms and can support their learning at home.

These expectations are key to young people succeeding at Trident, and we will be working consistently alongside whānau to implement and maintain them for the benefit of all our students' success.

Whānau making sure that students come every day, arrive on time to school, and in uniform with the gear they need for the day is such a great start for their learning, and we appreciate the efforts you make to help this happen. Please contact your whānau teacher if you need help with any of the above.

ANZAC Day Participation

On ANZAC Day, our Service Academy students led by Staff Shaw participated in the Dawn Service and also the Civic Service at the War Memorial Hall. Our students showed leadership through service and great self-discipline in their work at both events, and Trident was proud of their service. The prefects were also there to lay a wreath and represent the school at the War Memorial service, and again they served the school well.

On our return to school, we held Trident’s ANZAC Day assembly, and we were proud of the somber and respectful response of our students as they learned about the war that took so many lives. Special thanks to Staff Shaw, Mrs. Farrell, and Sharon Cousins (who shared the story of her grandfather’s participation and the medal whānau received in recognition).

PPTA Strike Action

As you will have seen in the media, the secondary schools teachers' union, the PPTA, is in the middle of industrial action. For term two, this will involve different year levels of students being rostered home for the day, as well as a full strike day. We will notify whānau before each day, but in brief, here are the days when students are affected in the first part of the term -

  • Week 2 Thursday, 4 May Year 11s rostered home.
  • Week 3 Tuesday, 9 May Year 12s rostered home.
  • Week 3 Thursday, 11 May FULL SCHOOL STRIKE DAY.
  • Week 4 Tuesday, 16 May Year 9s rostered home and Wednesday, 17 May Year 10s rostered home.

Obviously, we are very hopeful that the negotiations between the union and the Ministry of Education bring a swift resolution, and we can return to full school education for all our students uninterrupted.

Celebrating Success

At the end of term one, we had a wonderful assembly for all our students and celebrated the excellent efforts our students had made to improve their attendance. We gave out prizes and certificates and acknowledged the efforts that students had made to be in class every day, every lesson. Huge thanks to whānau who are supporting their students to recognise the importance of their education and the need for self-discipline and self-management if our students are to succeed in the workforce and the adult world ahead of them.

Next week, our senior school assembly is to celebrate personal excellence - for all those students we see working hard, showing commitment, and progressing through their NCEA certificates. We are really proud of their progress and look forward to acknowledging it together.

Farewells and Welcomes

At the senior school assembly, we will also be farewelling Caroline Reddish, who has left her role as Deputy Principal at Trident to take up a position at Saint Cuthbert’s College for Girls, Auckland, as their Director at Kahanui Outdoor Education Centre. The center is a local outdoor center offering a rotating program for year ten girls throughout the year. Mrs. Reddish will make an excellent leader in this outdoor space, and her promotion to this position is testament to her skills, expertise, and commitment. We will miss her greatly and appreciate the significant contribution she has made to the school over the years.

We welcome in her place Mrs. Jenny Mays, who has taken up the position of Deputy Principal responsible for Curriculum. Mrs Mays has been working beyond secondary education for a few years, but she brings experience as a Deputy Principal at Opotiki College, great knowledge of the area, and a warmth and passion for educating students in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. We are delighted to have her join our community.

Huge thanks to the teachers and coaches who have continued to support our students during the holidays through their sports activities. The details of our successes are in the newsletter, and we are very proud of our students' commitments and achievements in their sports.

Once again, we are pleased to welcome everyone back to school for an exciting and challenging term - enjoy your weekend and time with whānau. We will see students on Tuesday - after the NCEA Teacher only Day on Monday.

Ngā mihi,

Adrienne Scott-Jones

Uniform

As the weather gets colder, our students need extra layers of clothing to keep warm on their way to school and during the school day.

Please support us by ensuring that students are wearing white thermals, the Trident fleece or jacket, and a plain black jacket or raincoat if they do not have a Trident jacket.

We kindly ask that hoodies not be worn to school as they are not part of the school uniform and can cause disruptions in the classroom, as teachers have to manage students removing incorrect uniform. If a student arrives at school wearing a hoodie, they will be asked to remove it and store it in their bag. We always have options available for students to borrow a clean, warm fleece from the school office.

UK Soccer Tour

The UK Tour Group, led by Mr Stanhope and Mr Barr, embarked on an exciting 3-week tour. They arrived at Heathrow after a long flight and were taken to their accommodation in Silkstone. The boys had an opportunity to tour Elland Road, home of Mr. Stanhope's beloved Leeds United, and also visited Anfield Stadium, home of Liverpool F.C. The group also had the privilege of playing against different teams like Barnsley FC U16 and meeting ex-student Jamie Searle, who currently plays for Barnsley FC's first 11 football team.

The boys also experienced the English football culture by being the flagbearers for Rotherham United v West Bromwich Albion before kick off and witnessing a Premier League match between Leeds United and Crystal Palace. They had an opportunity to tour Old Trafford, home of Manchester United Football Club, and St James' Park, home to Newcastle United F.C. The tour ended with a memorable meeting with All Whites Captain Chris Wood and a tour of the Emirates Stadium, home to Arsenal F.C.

The group returned home on Thursday 20 April, feeling enriched and grateful for this amazing experience. The boys showcased their commitment, passion, and kia manawa nui spirit throughout the tour.

Trident Basketball Tournament

Three Trident basketball teams spent last week at Owhata Marae. The junior boys A, senior girls, and senior boys A team travelled to Rotorua on Tuesday for a 2-day noho before playing in the annual Tip-Off tournament.

After the powhiri and setting up the wharenui, players participated in team-building activities thanks to Lynette Ngaheu. Day 2 involved more team building, strengthening Trident basketball culture, and training sessions.

The tournament commenced on Thursday with the junior boys losing Kingstyn Te Naiti, who suffered an injury in the first game and was on crutches for the rest of the tournament. The boys managed to come away with three wins and one loss in pool play to claim the number one spot in the Boys division 1 pool A. They met Te Awamutu in a very close semifinal. Trident took the win 40-39 and went on to play John Paul College in the finals. John Paul College got out to a good lead in the first quarter, and Trident was unable to reel it back in. Overall, it was a good tournament for the team with plenty of positives and areas to work on for the season ahead.

The senior girls had a tough task coming up against some strong BOP girls' teams that featured some NZ age-group players. Unable to gain a win, the team managed to improve their performance with each game.

With seven teams in the Senior boys Division 1, it was a straight round-robin for Trident senior A boys. Day 2 of games saw another injury in the Trident camp, with Vadim Moke-Kingi ending up on crutches. The team did well to win three out of their six games, with their losses being close games throughout.

Thanks to Ms. Kim Wilson, Greg Robertson, Te Ahuroa Cossey, Steph Walker, Matua Mike Te Kurapa for taking the teams for the week. Thanks also to Gerald Moke for helping out and a massive thank you to Whakatane Fresh Market for their sponsorship.
