LUNGevity Researchers Take Action to Improve Routine Lung Cancer ScreeningAre you eligible for lung cancer screening? Catching lung cancer early, before it spreads, saves lives. When we use lung cancer screening to detect lung cancer earlier, it’s easier to treat and sometimes it’s even curable. Project ACTS (Adherence to CT Screening), a partnership between LUNGevity Foundation, the University of Colorado, and the Moffitt Cancer Center, has developed a toolkit to support lung cancer screening programs around the country. The toolkit will help doctors support people’s efforts to return for follow-up low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans, which are an essential part of effective lung cancer screening and early detection. Recently, a major milestone in this project—a scientific study describing how the toolkit was developed—was published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology’s Clinical and Research Reports. This work was made possible with the support of Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation. Eligibility for lung cancer screening in the US depends on age and history of tobacco exposure. Are you eligible? Take this quiz to find out. Top Lung Cancer Discoveries at WCLC and ESMO 2024At the end of summer, the scientific community buzzes with anticipation for two major conferences, the World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). These conferences bring us the latest breakthroughs in lung cancer treatment and early detection. Every year, LUNGevity brings you the big news from these conferences, including recaps of the most important advances in treating NSCLC, SCLC, and more. This year, the excitement reached new heights! There was so much groundbreaking research to share that LUNGevity had to split its coverage into four separate articles. Ready to dive into a treasure trove of cutting-edge research? Advocate Spotlight: May OgilvieMeet May, a self-described “mom, wife, warrior” and lung cancer survivor-advocate from Greater Houston, Texas. May advocates with her daughter, Mia, in mind. May’s strongest motivation comes from a deep desire to see Mia grow up and to increase quality of life and survivorship for current and future lung cancer patients. May recognizes the importance and urgency of research advocacy. “The advances from scientific research are nothing short of amazing,” she says. “I, and others like me, need the research breakthroughs to continue.” May has also met with her members of Congress on Capitol Hill to urge them to support increases in federal funding for lifesaving lung cancer research. May takes every opportunity she can to raise awareness about lung health and lung cancer and to counter harmful stigmas. May says that even close friends and family have told her, “You don’t look like you have cancer.” But she reminds them that even though it might not be obvious from the outside, living with lung cancer is a daily battle of mental fortitude. Read more of May’s story on the LUNGevity Action Network blog. Important changes are coming to the Medicare Part D program in 2025.
