Poll Reveals Young People Are Experiencing a Crisis of Confidence
Our friends at the Get Focused Stay Focused National Resource Center recently shared the results of a poll done by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development that revealed young people are experiencing a crisis of confidence when it comes to their view of the future and their belief in their ability to succeed.
Of the 2,000 16- to 24-year-olds who were polled, 41% feel their job ambitions are impossible to achieve as a result of the pandemic, and 43% feel they will never have a job they really love.
Helping students build social-emotional and planning skills earlier––as early as middle school, according to researchers––will make it easier for them to envision a productive and achievable future, increasing student success and college aspirations. This is why the Building a Bridge to Your Future middle school curriculum weaves key tenets from social-emotional learning with focused career awareness and exploration activities, giving students the skills and motivation needed to succeed in high school, college, and a career.

More Students Looking Toward the Future at Hoopeston Area High School
Students at Hoopeston Area High School enter their freshman year already having learned about the importance of having a 10-Year Plan for the future in middle school, so they are starting to put more thought into planning their high school schedules.
“I see a lot more students looking toward their future,” said Suzanne Lambert, a teacher at Hoopeston. “We have the Building a Bridge curriculum in middle school, so they come up talking about it a little more. A lot of them are starting to have a plan now when it comes to scheduling their classes.”
