Hi Friend,
You're back at the full desk schedule now. Summer's over, the calendar filled up fast, and somewhere in the last couple of weeks your low back went from fine to noticeably tight. You've probably blamed the chair, maybe the weather.
Here's the thing. Every September we see the same thing in the office. Guys come in saying their back is acting up and they can't figure out why. It's rarely mysterious. Your body just went from a loose, moving summer to eight hours a day back in the chair, and it noticed.
- It's not the chair, it's the hours in it
All summer you were up and moving without thinking about it. Now you're seated most of the day, and the low back stiffens up because it's holding one position for hours.
Try this: Set a quiet reminder to stand every 45 minutes. Just get up, walk to fill your water, and roll your hips a few times before you sit back down. That small break interrupts the stiffness before it settles in.
- Your body went from summer mode to desk mode overnight
The jump from an active summer to a full sitting schedule is a big change, and the low back is usually the first place to complain about it. That's the September pattern, plain and simple.
Try this: Ease the transition by keeping one active thing on your day. A short evening walk after dinner tells your back the summer movement isn't gone completely.
- Tight in the morning usually points somewhere specific
If your back is stiffest getting out of bed and loosens as you move, that's worth mentioning. That pattern tells us a lot about what's actually going on.
Try this: Before you get up, pull both knees gently to your chest and hold for a slow count of ten. Do it twice. It wakes the low back up before you ask it to carry you through the day.
