Philanthropy and International Development

With aid budgets being cut globally, there is new impetus to mobilise development financing from all sources, recognising the comparative advantages of public and private finance. Philanthropy isn’t a panacea, but it can play a catalytic role in sustainable development, as recognised at the recent United Nations Finance for Development conference in Seville.

Join us tomorrow, Thursday 23 October, 2:00-3:00pm (Canberra time) for a timely discussion on how philanthropy can boost collective investment and grow pipelines of country-led, sustainable initiatives.

Featuring:

  • Ragnheiður Elín Árnadóttir, Director of the OECD Development Centre
  • Naina Subberwal Batra, CEO of AVPN
  • Julie Rosenberg, Executive Director of the Australian International Development Network
  • Anita Toy, Executive Director of Myriad Australia
  • Taholo Kami, CEO and Principle Partner at Kami Pasifiki
  • Anna Marsden, Managing Director of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation

Our program

Last week AP4D helped organise an Australia-Vietnam Track 1.5 Maritime Security Dialogue in Hanoi as part of the Blue Security Program. Many thanks to the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam for hosting, to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Embassy colleagues for their ongoing support, and to the Vietnamese and Australian academic delegations for insightful discussions.

Blue Security is a collaboration between La Trobe Asia, UNSW Canberra, the United States Studies Centre, UWA Defence and Security Institute and AP4D.

Vietnam-Australia Track 1.5 Maritime Security Dialogue

AP4D recently launched a paper by Philipp Ivanov that identifies a whole-of-nation opportunity for Australia to redefine Asia literacy for the 21st century — integrating technology, demography and mobility together with education, advocacy and policy institutions. In addition to a fascinating panel discussion (which you can watch below) it was great to hear from Tim Watts MP, who took the opportunity to announce a new inquiry into Australia’s Asia capability.
