Today’s ‘Yesterday’s Australia’ segment is thanks to the lovely @Suzanne rose: ‘Who remembers riding in a red rattler train, with the dark green seats and the dirty windows that were hard to open and this was the only form of an air conditioner? You had to open the heavy door to get on and off the train. It was normal to ride the trains with the doors open, and you would see a person or two hanging out of them. They would only be closed on rainy days. At one stage, you could smoke in every carriage and then only one carriage was dedicated
as a non-smoking carriage. And let’s not forget how the Red Rattler got its name - it rattled so much you had to shout to talk. Imagine the youth of today using these trains.’
Ah, the Red Rattler. A true icon of Australian public transport. Suzanne’s description of the Red Rattler is so vivid I can almost hear it! It’s a reminder of how much things have changed in Australia over the years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Suzanne!
