School Carnival

School Carnival

This year's annual OMS school carnival once again proved to be a very special day! On October 28th, the children appeared in their matching light blue t-shirts and enjoyed a bouncy castle and a variety of games; face painting; balloon art; cotton candy and popcorn. The highlight of the event was a puppet show performed by the Puppet Art Theater Co. featuring a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk!

The fun-filled morning ended with a pizza and fruit lunch. As one parent described it, "the kids were over the moon."

Read our latest blog by Ms. Janani Rajyasri, A to I (Birth to 3 Years) Guide

Dr. Montessori writes in one of her many phenomenal books, “Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed.” The word that stands out the most to me is not succeed, but can. Children build their sense of self very early on in life and a big part of this is faith in themselves. For a baby who is lovingly transported from one place to another, crawling is a big step in this direction. They learn they can after all get to all the places they wish to, not just where mama wishes them to. For a toddler who has...

Silent Journey & Discovery

Silent Journey & Discovery

OMS hosted the Silent Journey and Discovery event on November 18th which gave parents a better understanding of their children’s work and daily routine at school.

Silent Journey and Discovery is useful for adults to expand their knowledge about the Montessori philosophy, terminologies, materials and names of lessons which can be difficult to understand without a thorough preface. The goal of this session was to increase parent's knowledge about their child's work and learn about their day, which in turn will help them have a better context when their child shares information with them.

Opening and Closing

Opening and closing containers helps children develop control and coordination; focus of attention; motive of purposeful activity; and integration of mind and body.

Spindle Box

The spindle box contains symbols that represent a specific quantity of separate objects. This introduces the concept of zero and the fact that the only numerals are 0 - 9.

Number Rods

Number rods help children experience the quantities of each number and learn their respective names. They also show that each number is represented by a single object, as a whole and separate from others.

Painting

Aside from the obvious creative benefits, easel painting (a part of the practical life curriculum) helps children master skills like holding a brush, wiping, rinsing and cleaning.

Grinding Coffee

The repetition involved in grinding coffee can lead to a calmness through the effort involved and the place of flow when one gets lost in the experience of the moment.
