Hello Friend,
Today, I want to share something that might sound simple, yet it’s a principle I’ve seen make a real difference in both business and life: Stay Cool and Be Kind. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the hustle, the drive, the endless pursuit of success. But sometimes, the calm and the kindness create real momentum.
In April of ‘24, on the Let Me Save You 25 Years podcast, I sat down with Marshall Mosher, an action sports and adventure expert who lives life on the edge—literally.
We dove into what it means to “stay cool” under pressure and how this mindset doesn’t just apply to the wild world of extreme sports but also to the everyday challenges we all face. Imagine being misunderstood as a threat while paramotoring in a foreign country and still managing to handle the situation calmly—that’s Marshall’s life! This episode is packed with insights on how staying grounded can transform difficult situations into life-changing opportunities.

The Story: Pandemic Panic
Over the years, I’ve had plenty of practice staying calm even when things are falling apart. One of those times happened right at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lovesac was booming, and suddenly, within days, the country was in lockdown, and 80% of our revenue vanished as we had to close almost all our brick-and-mortar stores. It was surreal and terrifying.
At that moment, I had to make a choice: react out of fear or stay cool and find a way forward. We pivoted hard, ramping up our e-commerce efforts to reach customers online. It wasn’t easy, and there were days I felt like I was walking a tightrope with no safety net. But that decision to stay calm and realize we were all dealing with variables way outside our control kept our team focused on solutions instead of problems. Today, Lovesac (along with our team) is stronger for it, and the experience taught me a lot about resilience and adaptability in the face of the unknown.

The Power of Kindness
Kindness is often underestimated in business. But think about it: kindness builds trust, loyalty, and lasting connections. Whether working with team members, engaging with customers, or even dealing with competitors, kindness sets you apart in a way that skills alone cannot. Some of my proudest moments at Lovesac have come from the incredible culture our team has built together—one rooted in genuine care and respect for each other. The little gestures, supportive conversations, and willingness to lift others up truly create success over the long haul.

Three Simple Steps to Stay Cool and Be Kind:
Take a Breath, Assess the Situation
In moments of chaos, it’s tempting to react immediately. But often, the best action is to take a moment, breathe, and look at the big picture. That pause can mean the difference between a rushed decision and a smart, thoughtful response.
Lead with Empathy
Showing kindness isn’t just about being “nice”—it’s about understanding where others are coming from. In every situation, consider how you’d want to be treated. This mindset builds trust and respect, two things that go a long way in life and business.
Act, Don’t React
When challenges come up, stay grounded. Instead of reacting emotionally, look for the best next step forward. Kindness is often found in steady, intentional actions. It’s those small, thoughtful decisions that ultimately create positive outcomes.

One Last Thought
Look, we all want to succeed, make our mark, and do something that matters. But sometimes, success isn’t about pushing harder—it’s about staying calm and keeping your integrity intact. The power of being calm and kind in tough times is a lesson I’ve learned the hard way, but I keep coming back to it. You might not always be able to control the chaos, but you can control how you show up for it.

Shawn and I met while crossing between two hot air balloons 10,000 feet in the air. That pretty accurately describes what owning your own business is truly like... terrifying, risky and not for the faint of heart! In Let Me Save You 25 Years, Shawn really captures the essence of what it takes to be an entrepreneur in a uniquely candid way.
