Welcome to the latest newsletter from the Leadership for Personalised Care team It's been a really busy year so far in the Leadership for Personalised Care world. July saw the 10th cohort of our national programme drawing to a close, and we bid farewell to another amazing bunch of leaders, who now join an alumni group of over 300 people. In 2022 and 2023 we worked out that we have supported nearly 3,000 leaders! Some have been participants in our in-person and online programmes, and many have accessed our online materials in their own time, including the Introduction to Leadership for Personalised Care course on FutureLearn which is featured in this newsletter - spread the word as the feedback we have had about the course is very encouraging. Don't miss an opportunity to sign up for the 5th Year Anniversary gathering of the #SocialCareFuture movement - we have some free places for alumni of our face-to-face programmes, but we may be able to accommodate people who have signed up to future programmes and are just waiting for dates! Please do enjoy what's rest of the nice weather and happy reading! Catherine Wilton - Programme Founder and DirectorOur WorkIt’s a wrap: “Inspirational” LECPC 10 concludes The 10th cohort of our acclaimed Leadership for Empowered Communities completed the sixth and final day of the course by hearing from a series of inspirational speakers who reflected on their professional and personal experiences in helping to shape health and social care policy. Helen Sharp, a co-director at the Ideas Alliance, was first up with a compelling message about the central role co-production and collaboration can play in the delivery of public services and outcomes. “Align your purpose with the purpose of the people,” said Helen, who was a participant in the second cohort of the LECPC. Dame Philippa Russell, DBE, needed little introduction after her lifetime championing the cause of carers, based on her own lived experience as a parent of a son with learning disabilities and brain damage and with a husband who suffered with Lewy Body dementia. “We all strive for a gloriously ordinary life,” she said. “Focus on care, not the cost.” John Evans OBE, a pioneer of the Independent Living movement, spoke of the progress that has been made since the 1980s on the day his battles for disability rights were marked by a film “My Fight for Freedom” -- which was exclusively launched during Co-Production Week 2023. Anna Severwright and Martin Routledge, co-convenors of Social Care Future, presented their vision for the future and the role their voluntary organisation can play in shaping policy and changing attitudes. “We are a social movement born out of frustration but powered by hope,” said Anna. At the conclusion of the session, which was held at the NCVO headquarters in London, participants took it in turn to present certificates to each other to acknowledge the teamwork ethos which plays such an important part in making the LECPC a unique and valued experience. Susie Dion, a senior project manager within a GP federation in Northampton, gave her own personal reflection: “I’ve learned so much about myself and where my career is going,” she said. "After 20 years in health this course has re-invigorated my passion and given me real inspiration.” Institute for Employment Studies shares case studies Prince, Integrated Care Transformation Senior Manager, Windsor and Maidenhead Case studies from participants in NHS Leadership Programmes have been highlighted by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), the renowned independent centre for research and evidence-based consultancy. Prince, Integrated Care Transformation Senior Manager within the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, is among those featured after he attended a regional Leadership for Personalised Care programme. He says, "[The Personalised Care Team] had action learning sets which I got involved in. That’s been really immensely helpful… it was in a small group, and we were able to kind of talk through some of the challenges and hopes that we have for our personalisation journey.’ Impact of the programme Since attending the course, Prince has worked to develop personalisation and co-production approaches across the whole Frimley ICS and focused on collaboration and empowering residents to make their own decisions on about their health needs and lifestyle. He has also encouraged his staff to access the free bitesize programmes and masterclasses available on the NHS Leadership Academy website. And to read the evaluation in full see https://www.leadershipforpersonalisedcare.org.uk/evaluation_evidence.html Future Learn – free programme for health and social care leaders Leadership for Personalised Care on Future Learn is a specially tailored three-week online programme designed to give participants an introduction to the meaning and importance of personalised care and to equip them with the skills and knowledge to become more effective leaders and advocates for health improvement across the population. Our PeoplePutting leadership into practiceIn each of our newsletters, we share with you stories of leaders who are applying a person-centred approach in their work. Charlotte Rogers – Personalisation approaches for Long Covid sufferers For Charlotte Rogers, participating in Cohort 9 of the LECPC could not have been more timely or appropriate. Charlotte is the Long Covid programme manager, co-ordinating services for the NHS across Sussex, and was determined that the care and support for patients would be personal to them and their specific needs. “We have managed to deliver the services at light speed in a personalised way so coming on the course at the same time was really useful and embedded and underpinned everything we did with the Trusts in Sussex,” she said. “We had identified that a personalised and holistic approach for Long Covid sufferers was required, based on ‘what matters to them’,” “I set up personalised care steering groups who worked with the Trusts to make sure that was put in place,” said Charlotte. With people now being discharged, Charlotte and her team have the chance to evaluate the impact of their work though patient feedback and to carry forward any lessons for NHS rehabilitation and reablement services. “The good news is that we did a lot of things right in this programme and implementation leads from Trusts were dedicated to this strategy,” she said. Andy Walker - tutor with lived experience and all-round brilliant person! Andy Walker was involved in an accident 16 years ago that left him paralysed from the neck down with a high-level spinal cord injury. He now runs an international consultancy organisation and is a motivational speaker for workplaces, universities and schools. As a tutor on our programmes he inspires and encourages participants to push past what they initially think is possible and to dream big. His experience as an advocate of personal budgets has been invaluable to leaders wondering how to put personalised care into practice. As Andy says: "Team work makes the dream work!" and everyone appreciates the the infectious enthusiasm and can-do attitude he brings to the LPC team.
Our MissionCreating a community for change in health and social care By Julie Stansfield, Partnership Lead and Chief Executive of In Control Julie Stansfield, a co-founder and chief executive of the In Control partnership, reflects on her organisation’s host role in helping to create a community for change in health and social care and the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. I’m proud to have been involved in the iterations that has led to the “Collaborative Leadership Academy” which delivers the Leadership for Personalised Care programme. My main reason for this is the passion to develop leaders that focus on what really matters….People! Whilst everyone wants personalised care to work and be real….it’s now enshrined in law and guidance…getting from the words to real practice is not so easy. Too often we are tempted to go the easy route of creating multiple toolkits, processes and pathways to instruct people…but whilst that might get them doing “things right” it doesn’t necessary mean they are then doing the “right thing” and creating real change. L4PC takes people from instruction to understanding and from employee to leader. ......to read the rest, please see our website: https://www.leadershipforpersonalisedcare.org.uk/blogs_news.html
