TALKING TOURISM

Issue 804 Thursday, 9 May, 2024

Kaya ,

This week’s update is both exciting and bittersweet, as the 2024-25 State Budget is unveiled by the WA Government, and I prepare to farewell the Dream Team at Tourism WA tomorrow.

Starting with the exciting news for tourism's budget, today the WA Government announced a $36.6 million boost for WA's tourism sector. This funding includes an additional $25 million allocated over the next four years to the Major Events Fund and $3.6 million dedicated to a brand new Metro Events program, which will focus on creating iconic homegrown events in and around the Perth/Boorloo region.

This is a significant investment and we’re pleased to be able to lock in even more blockbuster and homegrown events across Western Australia and Perth.

The State Budget also included a $4.9 million commitment to continue our agency’s Tourism Workforce Development Program, which aims to attract workers to the tourism industry through long-and-short-term programs. Tourism WA has been proud to support the industry in addressing workforce shortages and this extra funding will allow us to build an even bigger pipeline of future tourism and hospitality staff.

We also received $1 million to boost the state’s cruise tourism program and to help deliver the WA Cruise Tourism Strategic Plan (2023-2033). Cruise is a growing industry in Western Australia, with the 2022-23 season generating $333 million for the WA economy. Having additional funding to dedicate to this sector will undoubtedly lead to even bigger economic contributions.

Other initiatives announced as part of the State Budget include:

  • $1.6 million to continue biannual stakeholder regional roadshows, extend our existing partnership with Tourism Council WA and continue receiving key tourism data from the Commonwealth; and

  • $500,000 for feasibility studies for new tourism attractions.

It is fantastic to see the WA Government’s continuing investment in tourism, to ensure we can keep delivering outstanding experiences for new and returning visitors. It also places Tourism WA in a strong position to deliver the vision of our 10-year Western Australia Visitor Economy Strategy, to grow visitor spend to $25 billion by 2033.

Finally, it is time to say farewell, as tomorrow will be my last day as Managing Director at Tourism Western Australia. During my tenure, I have had the pleasure of interacting with numerous operators across Western Australia and their passionate industry bodies. Being so immersed in the dedication and expertise of our visitor-facing industry has been truly inspiring, and I am confident ‘WA the Dream State’ will continue its extraordinary trajectory of success in the coming years.

As you are aware, Steph Underwood is stepping into the role of Acting Managing Director while recruitment gets underway for a permanent Managing Director. Your support to Steph during this period is greatly appreciated.

I would like to once again take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to each of you for your unwavering commitment to Western Australia’s exceptional tourism industry. I look forward to continuing to work closely with industry once my new role commences next month.

Carolyn Turnbull
Managing Director
