Source and Photo: DPIRD Round 4 of the successful Agrifood and Beverage Voucher Program is now open, with up to $15,000 available to food and beverage businesses to improve competitiveness, scale, export preparedness, resilience, and sustainability. Businesses looking to become 'future ready' and pursue carbon assessments and emissions reduction strategies are encouraged to apply under the environmental sustainability and social responsibility category. Other categories include business planning, manufacturing for business growth, sales and marketing, and financial health. Businesses can also use the vouchers to prepare for export or for export planning. Over the past five years, 134 small and medium sized regional and metropolitan businesses from the Kimberley to the South Coast have received 207 agrifood and beverage vouchers, valued at more than $950,000. The matching dollar-for-dollar vouchers have helped recipients to expand, diversify, value add and capture new market opportunities – generating flow-on benefits to the community and the State economy. Previous recipients have used the vouchers for advice on reducing their carbon footprint, developing new e-commerce capabilities, succession planning to ensure continued local ownership, and strategic marketing planning for national expansion. For more information and to start your application visit the WA Agrifood and Beverage Voucher Program website. Applications close 5pm Monday 27 March 2023. More... DPIRD’s Diagnostic Laboratory Services (DDLS) now provide WA’s first National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited Shellfish Biotoxin tests. The tests assist WA seafood producers to meet export requirements, while helping to protect WA’s reputation as a clean and safe producer of seafood Led by laboratory scientist Ricarda Fenske, the project is just one involving DPIRD’s scientists who were celebrated as part of International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February). Ms Fenske said the new high-end equipment was set to test for 27 different toxins in a variety of molluscs to meet stringent international testing requirements. “Seafood such as oysters and mussels can sometimes accumulate toxins in their flesh from the algae they eat,” Ms Fenske said. “Testing for these toxins was not previously available in WA and seafood samples were sent interstate which took time and added to the cost for WA seafood producers.” As part of a market diversification priority, DPIRD has also been supporting the aquaculture industry on navigating market access requirements for WA shellfish products for markets like European Union and Singapore. This new capability to conduct biotoxin testing will assist the WA aquaculture industry to expand into export markets and will provide greater consumer confidence in WA produce. More... World Pulses Day (10 February) recognised the significance of pulses – also known as grain legumes – which include lupins, lentils, chickpeas, field peas and faba beans. Research by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is backing the WA industry, with work across crop genetics and agronomy through to supply chain support. A key project, backed by the Australian Government's Agricultural Innovation Hubs Program, has brought together WA-based lupin processing and food businesses with technical professionals to establish a new syndicate called Sweet Lupin Western Australia. The group aims to advance the production and export of lupin food ingredients and finished food products from the State. DPIRD is also leading WA trials for a new national pulse physiology project to help match chickpea varieties and agronomy with soil and climate to help growers maximise yield and profit. More... While freight rates remain high compared to pre-COVID, global airfreight pricing declined 1% in the first two weeks of January 2023. The global average rates of USD$3.06/kg is 6% lower in January 2023 versus December 2022. Elevated rates are likely to persist in the near-term due to high passenger traffic and fuel costs. On 20 January 2023 Oceania jet fuel prices were $122/barrel, 18% higher than December 2022 and 33.6% higher than the same period in 2022. The recording and slides from last week’s Export Supply Chain Industry Briefing are now available. The Export Supply Chain Service is an Austrade initiative to coordinate supply chain insights while connectivity to international markets remains volatile, capacity diminished and rates expensive.
