New York state employers will no longer be allowed to test employees for cannabis, according to new regulations released by the state Department of Labor. While employers in the transportation industry are acutely aware of the effects COVID-19 has imposed over the last 18 months, another phenomenon has been making itself known: the ever-increasing tally of states and localities across the country legalizing cannabis for medicinal and recreational purposes. Amazon.com Inc. stopped testing for the presence of cannabis this summer, as did other companies facing a tight labor market and compliance challenges as more states legalize marijuana. The Minnesota Supreme Court on Wednesday held that federal law preempts a state Workers’ Compensation (WC) law requiring employers to reimburse injured employees for medical marijuana. It began as a fundraiser for the U.K.-based charity Macmillan Cancer Support in 2014, Sober October has become a global movement. And a free online tool from the state Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs and Department of Labor and Industry raises awareness about substance use disorder (SUD), which includes alcohol and drug addiction. “We're at a precipice, if we really want to drive business growth, our economy, advance our communities, and have healthy families, then we need to have really strong, resilient, healthy workplaces,” says Christine Yu Moutier, chief medical officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
