NEWS UPDATE

16 February 2024

Publishers note

This week has been an interesting one for news.

Firstly, congratulations to my friend and colleague Tim Simpson who was this week awarded the ‘Chester H. Wolfe Sportsmanship Award’ from the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). I loved what they had to say about Tim, and what I’d like to add is what they didn’t say, and that is that Tim is a true gentleman and champion. I had the honor of meeting Tim for the first time in 1992, and from that time until my last boat show in 2019, I had the pleasure of working with him each year. Congratulations Tim – you are deserving of any and every award you receive.

Next weekend, on February 24th and 25th, is a big weekend for sports. If you are in the south, the Superboats return to Wyndham Harbour in Melbourne’s outer west. If you are in Sydney, the 8th stop on SailGP’s 13-event Season 4 calendar will mark the league’s 5th visit to the iconic Sydney Harbour.

Both Mercury and Dockmate have launched new products designed to help boaties master their vessels, and on the Gold Coast the new $11.8 million Marine Centre of Excellence at Coomera has set sail. What I love is that the facility can accommodate up to 500 students studying Certificate III Marine Craft Construction and Certificate III in Marine Mechanical Technology.

It would be remiss of me not to mention our report on the inaugural weekend of the E1 series. We have written so much about this new event I was starting to worry that when it did finally arrive, it may not meet our expectations. I was wrong. I loved the event, the hype and everything that went with it. Make sure to spend some time to watch the coverage we have included in the story.
