Renewvia measures impact of its 22 minigrids in rural Africa. No images? Click here did you know?More than 600 million people live without access to affordable and reliable electricity in Sub-Saharan Africa. They do not have electricity to light their homes, refrigerate their food, and rely on dirty fuels such as charcoal, coal and kerosene for cooking and light sources. The link between energy access and eradication of poverty is well-known. Renewvia Energy seeks to combat this issue by engineering, building and operating solar minigrids in rural communities, supplying them with their first source of clean energy. We are actively measuring the impact of these minigrids on the communities we serve in terms of Gender Equality, Productivity, Health, Safety and Economic Activity. Access to electricity likely means better health services, increased access to clean drinking water, opportunities for quality education, increase in business activity and achievement of gender equality. Our goal is to accurately measure, quantify and report the IMPACT of Renewvia Minigrid Communities. energy access can have big impacts SOME INITIAL FINDINGS: • Over 90% of customers say they feel safer with access to exterior lighting from Renewvia's minigrid.* • Ability to charge phones at home increases from 35% to 91% after connection to minigrid, saving both time & money, and increasing productivity.* • In Nigeria, 67% customers spend less than N2000 monthly on kerosene after connection, thereby freeing up income.* • In Kenya, the average number of electronic devices nearly doubled 6 months after connection.* • Customers have a 65% increase in light hours after connection, increasing time children can spend on homework.* *Based on an aggregate average of pre-connection customers compared to an aggregate average of existing post-connection customers how do we ensure validity of data? We used: Preliminary hypothesis testing conducted using two-tailed, two-sample, unpaired, heteroscedastic t-test. Result: Testing demonstrated high confidence that assuming consistent effect size, the probability that statistical significance will be achieved is high (>99%). This minigrid provided the first affordable and reliable source of electricity to almost 500 households, schools, businesses, institutions, and places of worship. This became the first privately owned minigrid facility serving refugees in Africa. In 2022, Renewvia completed a huge expansion to this minigrid which now serves over 15,000 people with over 3,000 connections to homes and businesses that did not otherwise have access to electricity. Eventually this facility will provide power to the entire settlement which consists of over 40,000 individuals and businesses. |
