Grants available to help grow agriculture shows across WA

Applications are now open for the WA Government's Agricultural Show Grant Program.

Backed by $600,000 in funding, the program will support Royal Agricultural Society of WA (RASWA) affiliated societies and organisations across the State.

Grants of up to $10,000 are available to help organisations put on a show, support their volunteers, showcase local food and agriculture, and deliver activities for visitors.

The program is designed to back the people and places that make these events possible, from funding operational costs and volunteer programs, to introducing new attractions for visitors and investing in the upkeep and improvement of showground facilities.

Western Australia is home to around 60 agricultural shows which are important events for local communities.

Applications are open until 30 June 2026 to registered RASWA affiliates. The grant program will operate as a rolling application process, with each application assessed in the order it is received.

Further details, including eligibility criteria, as well as the application and acquittal forms, are available through the Affiliates Portal.

Spotlight on western rock lobster for World Fisheries Day

Western Australia's sustainable fisheries are being recognised on World Fisheries Day to highlight the importance of management to keep fish stocks at healthy levels.

Nine of the State's fisheries currently have independent sustainability certification by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) demonstrating WA's global leadership in fisheries management, underpinned by world-class science.

The West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery was the first in the world to receive MSC certification and was successfully recertified for the fifth time in 2022.

In the 2023-2024 season, the fishery's contribution to the WA economy was valued at $546 million.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's science and research programs support the sustainable management of rock lobster fishing and the fishery's ongoing MSC certification.

The annual scientific stock assessment showed stocks remain at sustainable levels, ensuring there will be a continual supply of lobster for export and local markets.

A popular year-round local market is the Back of Boat lobster program, which started in 2020. Through the program, the public can purchase freshly caught rock lobster directly from commercial fishers at the jetty.

Back of Boat significantly boosts local supply over summer, when lobsters are a key feature on festive table spreads.

More than 300,000 lobsters have been landed through the program since it started, with more than 25,000 sold from the back of boats in the lead-up to Christmas last year.

This year, Western Rock Lobster's Back of Boat lobster special sale day for Christmas is being held on Tuesday 23 December at ports throughout the State.

More information on locations and pre-ordering will be available closer to the date by visiting the Back of Boat website.

Important contribution of WA's primary industries highlighted

Western Australia's primary industries are being celebrated on National Agriculture Day, showcasing the sector's important contribution to putting food on the table and boosting the State's economy.

Horticulture, livestock, fisheries and grains businesses across the State produce high-quality, nutritious food and fibre products enjoyed by all Western Australians and consumers around the world.

National Agriculture Day recognises the work of all farmers and fishers who grow fresh produce across the State.

The primary industries sector's contribution to the WA economy continues to grow, with the gross value of production of WA's agrifood, fibre, forestry and fisheries industries increasing from about $10 billion in 2019-2020 to more than $11 billion in 2023-2024, following exceptional growing seasons in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 resulting in record grain crops.

Agriculture is WA's second largest export industry - behind the resources sector - with products destined for more than 120 international markets.

WA was the nation's biggest cereals exporter in 2023-2024 accounting for more than 50 per cent of the nation's exports, worth more than $7 billion.

Total WA primary industries exports increased by more than 50 per cent to just over $13 billion in the four years to 2023-2024, led by strong demand for cereals, canola, and meat and livestock.

ABARES Outlook 2026 - a forum to exchange and test ideas

Tickets are now on sale for ABARES Outlook 2026, the Bureau’s flagship annual conference taking place on 3-4 March at Hotel Realm, Canberra and online.

With the theme Reset. Rethink. Regrow: Cultivating Tomorrow’s Opportunities, the conference will explore what will shape Australian agriculture, fisheries and forestry into the future.

ABARES Executive Director Dr Jared Greenville said Outlook 2026 will be a forum for ideas to be exchanged and tested.

“We will host sessions to discuss commodity outlooks, competition in agriculture, land and sea use change, climate and sustainability, data, innovation and productivity, and food security,” Dr Greenville said.

“These discussions are important given the competing demands on farming and the challenging global trading environment.”

The conference will comprise 10 sessions, which Dr Greenville described as a mix of panels, presentations, and fireside chats.

“For the first time we will be hosting a friendly debate on what the focus should be for growing Australian agriculture and we expect it to be a lively session,” he said.

Registration is now open for both in-person and digital conference experiences. A discounted ticket offer applies until 5 December.

For more details about the program, speakers and registration, visit ABARES Outlook 2026.
