The Gavel

Interim Dean Michael Sant'Ambrogio

Hello MSU College of Law Community,

I always knew you worked hard and accomplished so much! Since taking this role, I see more of your work, and I see it up close. It is important to all of us that your achievements receive the attention and recognition they deserve – for you, for the College of law, and for Michigan State University.

That’s why we produced this recent video giving an overview of who we are, where we came from and where we are going!

Additionally, we wanted to shine a spotlight on the most recent accomplishments of faculty and staff by relaunching The Gavel. Please keep us apprised of your work so that we may publish it here each month.

Looking forward, I am so excited for the 2024-25 academic year. We will welcome world-renowned scholars as new faculty, we have enrolled a class of talented 1Ls, and we will roll out restructured curriculum for first year courses. We are, indeed, Empowering Opportunity.

Meanwhile, it’s summertime! I hope you all are able to take some time off and enjoy a well-deserved vacation.

Professor David Blankfein-Tabachnick

The work of David Blankfein-Tabachnick and Kevin A. Kordana on the private law has received a response from Samuel Freeman, Avalon Foundation Chair in the Humanities, Professor of Philosophy and of Law at the University of Pennsylvania, in his recent Virginia Law Review piece, A Response to David Blankfein-Tabachnick & Kevin A. Kordana, On Rawlsian Contractualism and the Private Law.

Over nearly two decades, Professors Blankfein-Tabachnick and Kordana have defended a distributive account of private law against what they have called the “conventional view.” Their work has caused what USC Law Professor Gregory Keating has called a paradigm shift with significant ramifications for private law and its theory, law and economics, and law and philosophy in his article Shifting the Paradigm in Private Law Theory.

The exchange is “highly recommended” on the influential Legal Theory Blog in Freeman on Blankfein-Tabachnick and Kordana on the Difference Principle and Tort Law.
