Thursday Edition
Good morning, members or, as they would say in Japan, 'Ohayou gozaimasu!' How are you all this fine Thursday morning? We hope you’re all well and enjoying your day so far. Us? We're here again to give you some company and, of course, your daily dose of good ol’ fun! So, without further ado, let’s get started, shall we?
First up on the agenda, it's time to give you all the answer to yesterday's tricky riddle. For those of you who don't remember, the riddle goes:
Take three-quarters of a cross and a circle complete. Then let two semicircles on a perpendicular meet. Then take a triangle and give it two feet. Then two semicircles and a circle complete. All brought together, the thief of breath. It brings calm in life but early death. What is it?
This was a tricky one, eh? Well, it seems it wasn’t for a few of you who commented TOBACCO as your answer. That’s right; TOBACCO is the correct answer. Why? Because the riddle describes the shape of each letter of the word. Three-quarters of a cross is the shape of a T, and a circle complete is an O. The two semicircles on a perpendicular meet is B, the triangle with two feet is an A, the two semicircles and a circle complete are CC and O, and all brought together spells TOBACCO. The last line, ‘It brings calm in life but early death,’ refers to the health effects of smoking. So, if you got this one correct, stick around, and you’ll find a shoutout waiting for you at the end of the newsletter.
Next up on the agenda, folks is today’s Fascinating Fact!
Did you know that there are people who are afraid of being happy? It’s called ‘cherophobia,’ a specific phobia characterised by an irrational fear of happiness or good fortune. It comes from the Greek word ‘chero,’ which means ‘to rejoice’. People with cherophobia often avoid situations that could potentially make them happy. This includes participating in fun activities and rejecting opportunities that could lead to positive outcomes. So, if you or someone you know seem to shy away from happiness, they may have cherophobia.

For today’s 'Yesterday's Australia' segment, we have a lovely story from member @Chinners. ‘I grew up and went to school in the sixties in Yokine, Western Australia. An enduring memory I have of primary school is one year when a young Aboriginal boy named Charlie joined our class. He was the first indigenous lad that I had had as a classmate. In fact, I think he was the first at our school. His wide smile and infectious laughter were treasured by myself and my friends. I often wonder what became of Charlie. All I know of him is the
memories of a primary school kid.’
This is such a lovely memory, member @Chinners! There’s always that one classmate that stands out in our memories, and it sounds like Charlie was definitely that for you. It’s heartwarming to know that he left such a positive impression on you and your friends. We hope he’s doing well and living a happy life! Do you have any memories of your classmates that you can’t forget? Share your stories in our nostalgia thread here.
