Measure X Bond Newsletter

Message from the President

Dear Supporters of Gavilan College and Measure X,

As I prepare to retire from Gavilan College after 13 years with the district and a total of 40 years in higher education, I am reflecting on the many positive accomplishments and student-centered experiences along the way. Certainly one of the highlights for me was the passage of Measure X, the largest bond ever supported by the communities our district serves.  I am so appreciative of your support and proud of the progress made on bond projects to date, starting with the design of the San Benito County Campus. So many more positive changes are in the future for Gavilan, and it all began with you.

Dr. Kathleen Rose

Kathleen A. Rose, Ed.D, NCC
Superintendent/President
Gavilan Joint Community College District

When we started the intense work to gain community support for Measure X in 2018, you asked important questions of the college such as: how would the bond support student achievement and success? How would the bond contribute to community connections and increased instructional programs? Could the district be trusted to wisely manage the funds, provide regular updates to the community, and ensure that the voices of the voters were acknowledged? Thanks to you, the communities within our 2700 mile district radius stepped up and contributed to the historic passage of Measure X and the advent of a new era for Gavilan College.

My administrative team and I secured the expertise of the A Kennedy Group (AKG) to provide program oversight and the Measure X bond program was launched. Our Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee was formed, and it was obvious to me that the community would continuously be engaged in the success of the projects planned in partnership with the college community. I was not surprised!

And with that, a new chapter of the college’s history began to unfold,  just as we all began a celebratory year for Gavilan’s centennial. The excitement has been increasing ever since as planning continues for the major bond projects: the San Benito County Campus, the Library and Student Resource Center, the STEM Center, and several smaller modernization projects. The impact on the services we will be able to provide future generations of Gavilan students and alumni, employees, and community members will be a source of pride for decades to come.

So to all of you, the supporters of Gavilan College and Measure X,  I know that I am leaving the success of the bond program in excellent hands…yours. Please continue to advocate for our students and support the mission of the California Community Colleges. I am proud to have served as Superintendent/President during this historic time, and look forward to visiting our site locations as the future of higher education is built in our district.

Warmly,

Kathleen
