CLEAN HYDROGEN PARTNERSHIP UPDATES![]() Following the launch of the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (JU) on the 19th of November 2021, the Strategic Research Innovation Agenda (SRIA) and the first Call for proposals were published on the 1st of March 2022. The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) of the Partnership is the fruit of a collaborative work undertaken by Hydrogen Europe Research & Hydrogen Europe members and the European Commission, which started as far back as early 2020. This document outlines the research and innovation activities that will be tackled during the course of the Partnership to achieve the objectives of the JU. The Clean Hydrogen JU 2022 Call for proposals was the biggest research and innovation Call on hydrogen ever published in the EU with a total EU funding of 300.5M€. The Call includes 41 topics covering the whole hydrogen value chain. Due to its size, the topics were split into two groups with different deadlines: the first deadline was on the 31st of May whilst the second is the 20th of September. All necessary information is available on the Horizon Europe portal. On Wednesday 18th of May, the European Commission announced that an extra 200M€ of EU funding would be allocated to the Clean Hydrogen Partnership to double the number of Hydrogen Valleys in Europe, as part of the REPowerEU Plan. This extra funding will be streamlined in the future Annual Work Plans of the Partnership. Looking ahead, work on the next Annual Work Plan (AWP23) is in full swing. If you are a Hydrogen Europe Research member and wish to get involved, do not hesitate to get in touch. Click here to learn more about our role in the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking. NEWS FROM EUROPEHydrogen Europe Research is committed to REPower the EUOn 18 May, the European Commission published its REPowerEU Plan to make Europe independent from Russian fossil fuels well before 2030. The plan focuses on three pillars: saving energy, producing clean energy and diversifying energy supplies. Hydrogen is a key component of this plan. The ambitions for the production of hydrogen are considerably heightened. Whereas the Fit for 55 Package foresaw 5.6 million tons of hydrogen being produced by 2030, the Hydrogen Accelerator foresees the production of 10 million tons of domestic renewable and low-carbon hydrogen and 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen imports by 2030. On the demand side, the European Commission called upon the European Parliament and the Council to align the sub-targets for renewable fuels of non-biological origin foreseen under the Renewable Energy Directive with this heightened ambition. These sub-targets focus on the transport and the industry sector are currently under revision by the co-legislators. The Commission also called on industry to accelerate the work on missing hydrogen standards, in particular for hydrogen production, infrastructure and end-use appliances. Details on funding and financing are also included in the plan. A top-up of 200 million euros was announced for the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking in order to double the number of Hydrogen Valleys in Europe. The European hydrogen research community (represented with Hydrogen Europe Research’s 111 members) is prepared to support the deployment and scale up of the hydrogen value chain.
