CLASHING SQUIRREL

The haunting and cinematic collages of Clashing Squirrel could be a still from a never-before-seen horror film by Italian director Dario Argento. A seamless union of figures and animals evokes the age-old debate of man vs. nature. However, the role of the protagonist and aggressor oscillate. The faded colors of the vintage paper contrast with the uncanny disfiguration of portraits. Exaggerated facial proportions disrupt the focal point of a Hollywood headshot. Step into the spooky world of today’s issue.

Clashing Squirrel is a French collagist. A proud child of the eighties, her heart beats for analog and DIY. Collage is a vessel to showcase her love of second-hand books, flea markets, and discarded ephemera. There is beauty to be found in the obsolete. Hand-cutting helps her tune out this fast-paced soul-churning consumerist society and tune into her inner world. Collages are like silent poems, conjuring the vastness of human emotion. Few elements suffice to tell a story. New worlds take shape, and stories emerge.
