So much is lost with each passing, not only for the families involved, but also with the wider cohort of friends and industry colleagues. It’s equally, if not sadder, when we hear of the passing of one of the young ones amongst us. This week came the sad news of the passing of colleague and friend Kim Mastrowicz. Kim was not with our industry long, but during that time, she did leave a lasting impression on many of us for her kind spirit, smarts, and willingness to get on with it and get it done. Kim was a much-loved member of the Boating Industry Association Victoria, working as their event & marketing manager. Kim was at the helm of both the Melbourne Boat show and Melbourne Summer Boat Show for a period of time where she led the growth of both events. MIA Health of the Australian Marina Industry report releasedThe Marina Industry Association (MIA) has released its latest Health of the Australian Marina Industry Survey Report (HAMIS). Conducted every two years, since 2011, the survey continues to provide a comprehensive, comparable, and evolving perspective on the economic, social and environmental performance and contributions of Australian marinas. New technology lights up the location of SS Lake Illawarra Lying beneath the Derwent River in Hobart is the wreck of SS Lake Illawarra. A recent survey has illuminated this site in a whole new way. SS Lake Illawarra was a 140-metre bulk ore carrier that struck the Tasman Bridge and sank in 1975. This resulted in the tragic loss of 12 lives: seven ship crew and five motorists driving across the bridge. Riviera welcomed a further 35 new apprentices to their award-winning training programRiviera welcomed a further 35 new apprentices to their award-winning training program. The Apprentice of the Year Awards are designed to recognise both the outstanding contribution that apprentices provide to the marine industry and the importance of developing a strong future for training and careers. In the USA new powerboat sales normalising, continue to outpace pre-pandemic levelsIn the USA, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) reports new powerboat sales through Q1 2022 are showing signs of normalising following two years of historic growth. In the first quarter, new powerboat retail sales totaled 54,000 units, down 20 percent compared to Q1 2021, while continuing to surpass pre-pandemic levels, up 20 percent from Q1 2019’s 45,000 units.
