May is usually a month dedicated to preparing several important events, meetings and actions. As you can see in this newsletter, in HER we are preparing for the upcoming General Assembly in Madrid. The GA has several side events, meeting with Spanish Institutions and Enterprises and attending the event organized by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. We are supporting the preparation of the Hydrogen Week, proposing the involvement of Hydrogen Europe Research members in the programme topics, and planning to have an exhibition space for our association with several (ten) boots for our members. We aim at leveraging our visibility this year, and we look forward to increasing the impact of the week itself. Our Secretariat will be more than happy to provide you with information and guidance when interested. On our end, we are starting to promote the Hydrogen Week on several channels! Regarding our support to the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, in this period a lot of our members are involved in drafting the topics for the Annual Working Programme 2024. I’m thankful for the extraordinary effort in a constrained schedule. This year, it is of particular importance to prepare well-developed and mature topics, to allow a smooth negotiation meeting between our Technical Committee leaders and the whole group involved from Hydrogen Europe, the Joint Undertaking, DG RTD, DG Ener and DG Move from the European Commission. Immediately after this effort, Roadmap leaders, with the guidance of Technical Committee leaders and with the participation and support of many of you, will start the update of the roadmaps that will revise and update the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda. This is a unique occasion to rediscuss the content and details of the SRIA, and maybe agree on some novel and promising directions to be considered there. Finally, we are widening our alliances starting to interact with other partnerships and programmes of the European Commission, as well as platforms and other industrial initiatives. With the EIC we are co-organizing and sponsoring a workshop on seawater electrolysis, which is a topic of mutual interest. Said this, I wish you a pleasant read of the newsletter, where you can find several interesting initiatives and information, and a full update on our recent and imminent attended events. I look forward to seeing many of you at the next General Assembly in Madrid, where I’ll announce some novelties about the internal programme of Hydrogen Europe Research, with more participation for you in interesting initiatives that could give a significant impact in future perspectives of the European research in the hydrogen sector. Best wishes! During the 5 days, thought-provoking discussions with some of the most prominent stakeholders in the hydrogen sector will take place, covering the most pressing topics facing this new industry: the need for both urgency and pragmatism in creating the regulatory framework, the unique challenges different sectors face to decarbonize and how hydrogen can help, and how to remain a leader in an industry that has caught the attention of the rest of the world. Listen to what our President, Luigi Crema, has to say about this important event: Next to the different conference streams, an exhibition will also take place. Based on the success of the past editions, this year the expo floor is expanded into two halls for a total of over 8000 sqm, ready to welcome more than 6000 attendees. Hydrogen Europe Research will be a proud exhibitor during the Hydrogen Week. Click here to know more RESEARCH AND INNOVATION ROADMAPSIn this newsletter, we take the opportunity to remind you that Hydrogen Europe Research and Hydrogen Europe will soon kick off the update of their Research and Innovation Roadmaps. This process will start during the month of June and last until the end of the year – if you are a Hydrogen Europe Research member and are interested in participating, you can reach out to our Innovation Manager, Louis Mazurkiewicz – l.mazurkiewicz@hydrogeneuroperesearch.eu These 22 Roadmaps coordinated by Hydrogen Europe Research and Hydrogen Europe cover the whole hydrogen value chain (from production to various industrial and mobility end-uses, passing by storage, transport and distribution of hydrogen). They provide a forum for members to discuss the research and innovation activities that should be covered annually and are constituted of experts in their respective fields. CLEAN HYDROGEN PARTNERSHIP UPDATESThe deadline for the submission of proposals for topics included in the 2023 Call for proposals has passed (18 April 2023). In total, 132 proposals have been submitted, the breakdown per topic can be found here. Evaluations will soon start – results are expected to be communicated by the Programme Office of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership to all consortia in July 2023. In other news, the Clean Hydrogen Partnership hosted a webinar on the relaunch of the Hydrogen Valley Platform on 8 May 2023. The recording and presentations can be found here. NEWS FROM EUROPEPFAS ConsultationThe European Chemicals Agency has launched a public consultation inviting interested parties to send in scientific and technical information on the manufacture, placing on the market and use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by 25 September 2023. The aim of this consultation is to obtain more information on PFAS and give the opportunity to various stakeholders to have their say. Of particular interest is information relevant to the risks, socio-economic aspects, and alternative substances. A webinar presenting the consultation took place on Wednesday 5 April 2023 – the recording can be found here. The consultation is open until September. MEMBERS’ NEWSHyCARE PROJECT, 21 April 2023, Paris, FranceOn 21 April 2023, the final event of HyCARE Project took place in Paris with an exhibition entitled “The HyCARE system. Opportunities and challenges of the energy storage sector”. The show hosted by ENGIE Lab Crigen in cooperation with CNRS, aimed to show the main results of activities carried out during the HyCARE Project, supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, and coordinated by the University of Turin. Funded under the Horizon 2020 program, the HyCARE project made possible to develop a hydrogen storage tank with the use of a solid-state hydrogen carriers in large scale. With its innovative concept, the tank links hydrogen and heat storage for stationary applications. Therefore, it improves energy efficiency of the process and reduces the footprint of the whole system. You can read more about this event here. Next Generation Electrolysers North America, 21-22 June 2023 Dallas/Forth Worth, TX, USAThe deployment of large-scale electrolysers is the key technological element for the decarbonisation of central industrial and transport sectors. The existing electrolyser technology is now ready for a massive scale-up. To achieve the ambitious objectives that have been announced recently to accelerate electrolyser installations across the industrial sectors and to significantly reduce the costs of clean hydrogen production, considerable challenges have to be overcome by industrial users of electrolysers, system manufacturers, providers of components and materials, and other stakeholders within the hydrogen economy. The Next Generation Electrolysers summit, which will take place on 21-22 June in Dallas/Forth Worth, will bring together industrial investors, electrolyser experts, engineering specialists and other stakeholders along the value chain to discuss the development, manufacturing, deployment and integration of the next generation of industrial electrolysers. More information about the event can be found here. 6th Hydrogen Forum of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance, 27 June 2023, Brussels, BelgiumOn behalf of the Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, we are delighted to invite you to the 6th Hydrogen Forum of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance, which takes place on Tuesday, 27 June at the Maison du Bois in Brussels.
