Year in review

It's been a whirlwind twelve months for AP4D. After completing the inaugural program in June, AP4D now has three programs running:

  • Stage II of Shaping a Shared Future, funded by the Australian Civil-Military Centre
  • Strengthening Australia’s Pacific Engagement through Development, Diplomacy & Defence Dialogue, funded by DFAT Office of the Pacific
  • Blue Security, a DFAT-funded project focused on regional maritime security

AP4D engaged with policy debate through submissions to the New International Development Policy, Defence Strategic Review and Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Inquiry into supporting democracy in our region. This was complemented by dozens of speaking engagements and published articles, ensuring AP4D's contribution to public debate remains strong. The AP4D team also grew, welcoming Program Leads Heather Wrathall and Hugh Piper.

As the year draws to a close, our sincere thanks go out to our supportive funding partners, our esteemed Advisory Group, our wonderful working group contributors and editors, and everyone who has given the benefit of their guidance and advice. We wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday period and a happy New Year.

2022 by the numbers: 14 reports, papers & submissions, 29 private briefings, 40+ dialogues & consultations, 300+ experts consulted, 230+ policymakers briefed, 40+ articles published

Using all tools of statecraft

AP4D was founded in the belief that Australia needs to respect, resource and coordinate all the tools of statecraft to maintain its influence in a more difficult and complex world. We're heartened to hear parliamentarians, senior officials and commentators increasingly articulating Australia's foreign policy in such terms:

Video montage of high-level support for using all the tools of statecraft.

AP4D is currently conducting consultations for an options paper on what using all the tools of statecraft looks like in practice.
