LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE INDICATORS

The RegenWA and Perth NRM team recently completed the first phase of-ground data collection for GRDC funded investment 'Regenerative Agriculture: understanding the intent, practices, the benefits and disbenefits'.

The project, led by Southern Cross University, aims to establish best-practice monitoring approaches that can discern the impacts of regenerative agriculture in Australian cropping systems across a range of agronomic, soil health, ecological, social, and economic indicators. Ten farms have been surveyed across WA, ranging from the South Coast, to the Wheatbelt, and up to the Mid West. While sampling conditions have presented a number of obstacles, the opportunity to connect with farmers statewide and gain insights into their varied environments, achievements, and challenges has been invaluable. We are optimistic about the project's ability to contribute to the evidence base around regenerative agriculture.

CITY OF KALAMUNDA FIRE PROCEDURES FOR BIODIVERSITY

The City of Kalamunda’s Environment team have been leading the way in how they mitigate fire in their local natural areas (LNAs) and have conducted a project funded through the WA State NRM Office to consider biodiversity values when developing their management plans. By understanding the species that makes up the vegetation communities within each LNA and their response to fire, they can allow for more appropriate long term management of the LNA.

CITY OF KALAMUNDA GENISTA WEED ERADICATION PROJECT

The City of Kalamunda have been tackling the growing issue of the weed of national significance Genista with their weed eradication project Hasta La vista Genista funded through the WA State NRM Office Community Stewardship Grants. Genista can take over road verges, local natural areas and unmanaged areas leading to a decline in habitat health and increase the risks such as fire.

For more information of these projects contact the City of Kalamunda Parks and Environmental Services (08) 9257 9809 or visit: https://www.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/
