This funding includes $2 million to redevelop and modernise the Broome Tropical Aquaculture Park, to meet growing industry demand and expand aquaculture production and research capability in the north of the State. Source: WA Minister for Fisheries | Photo: DPIRD Following a comprehensive review of the current National Drought Agreement (NDA), which expires in June 2024, feedback is now being sought on the draft agreement for the next NDA. The Australian Government and all states and territories signed the NDA in 2018, committing to a consistent and shared approach to how we work together on drought. The review findings captured the significance of the Australian climate and environment and how important water is to our survival, prosperity and agricultural needs. The collective approach to drought policy is aligned to the Australian agricultural industry and business expectations, particularly about the respective roles of the farming sector and government. Thirty-three recommendations spanning across 12 distinct areas of interest were examined throughout the review. Understanding the interdependence of our evolving climate and agricultural industries is vital in addressing the threats to our environment on a governmental scale. The impacts of drought are felt primarily and most intensely by Australia’s farming communities and regions, and the NDA focuses on measures across all jurisdictions on bolstering risk management practices and enhancing long-term preparedness and resilience. The Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry – as secretariat for the review and acting for all NDA signatories – invites public feedback, which can be uploaded by a submission, completing a short survey, or both. Survey submissions are open until 3pm AWST on Friday 1 September 2023. More...
