The Impact of a Whole-School College and Career Readiness Model
Last year, the Get Focused, Stay Focused nonprofit shared a research report it commissioned to explore the impact of annual career development on high school students transitioning into community college.
Researchers tracked two cohorts of students through four years of high school at Orcutt Academy in Santa Maria, California, and two years at Allan Hancock College. The Orcutt Academy students all took a semester Career Choices series course as freshmen and two semesters of a senior college success course using lessons from the Get Focused...Stay Focused! Follow-Up Modules.
The results were clear. When compared with students who had not had time each year to revisit and update their career plans, the Orcutt Academy students:
- Earned more total credits and UC/CSU eligible transfer credits in community college.
- Were more likely to have completed their English and Math transfer credits in the first year of enrollment.
- Were also more likely to persist into the second year of study.

Conversations Revolve Around Career Goals at Benicia High School
Students are able to thrive and stay focused when their 10-year plans are included in conversations, including in counseling and in discipline, said Brianna Kleinschmidt, Principal at Benicia High School, one of the 2022 Career Choices Gold Medal Schools.
“It’s just changed the conversations we’ve had around career exploration and career readiness,” Kleinschmidt said. “Our students are more prepared, they’re asking different questions, and they’re taking the opportunities that they have. They’re just a little more focused.”
