Tuesday Edition

Good morning

Ah Tuesday, we meet again. The one day of the week that we feel like we actually get “stuff” done, mainly because we don’t ramble on for paragraphs and rather just get straight into the newsletter. Maybe you hate that about Tuesdays or maybe you love it? Either way, we actually have a stellar line up for you today, but first let’s reveal the answer to yesterday’s riddle. For those who forgot, the riddle goes:

An archaeologist discovers two ancient humans frozen in ice. He knew immediately that they were Adam and Eve. How did he know?

The answer? They didn’t have belly buttons! How on earth did so many of you get this correct? Honestly, I (Maddie) feel embarrassed about the fact I gave you all the apple hint, you probably sat there reading yesterday's newsletter thinking, “oh dear Maddie, you’re way off.” The other answer we received a lot was that Adam would have been missing a rib, which also works! Anyway, for those of you brilliant Riddle Masters, we’ve given you a shout-out below.

One more thing before we get into the news! We are running a 'joke' competition, where the best joke submitted before the end of November will receive a $100 Coles or Woolies voucher (at the winner's discretion). So get involved and submit your joke here.

Now, what’s happening across Australia and the world today?

  • "Absolutely love this tree!!! So easy to put together & looks wonderful." Aldi's $99.99 pre-lit Christmas tree has flown off the shelves and is all the rave online! If you’re looking for a Christmas tree, we wouldn’t go any further than here.
  • On the topic of Christmas, who here is involved in a Secret Santa or Kris Kringle and wants to get organised early? Well, we’ve got the perfect presents for under $30 right here.
  • “This is a lifesaving hack!” A Coles shopper completely transformed her laundry floor with very unlikely supermarket buy, who knew of this cleaning hack?
  • Never before seen snaps of the Royals, including a ‘young, happy chappy’ Prince Charles, are set to be auctioned off next week alongside letters from the Queen. Get a sneak-peak look at the photos and letters here.
  • Block Shock! Who else sat down on Sunday night to watch the Block Finale? We sure did! And we were shocked to see Mitch Edwards and Mark McKie be crowned the winners and walk away with a balmy $744,444.
  • Australia has a new Burger King and it isn’t American-owned! A little beachside shack Burger store from Noosa Heads has experienced a meteoric rise, and it’s taking on the international big buns (we had to) for Australia’s best burger joint.
  • Who here wants to wake up $1 million dollars richer? We certainly wouldn’t mind it. That’s exactly what happened to 25-year-old Sydney woman Joanne Zhu, when she took out the national cash prize for receiving her Covid-19 vaccines.
  • There’s an epidemic of liver disease in Australia’s regional areas with new figures suggesting nearly half of regional people over the age of 60 are affected.
  • Who doesn’t love a classic Aussie dish? Here are 10 ever-so-Aussie dinners that are easy to make and don’t break the bank.
  • Police have made a major breakthrough in the search for missing Victorian campers and secret lovers, Russell Hill and Carol Clay. The couple vanished from their campsite on March 20 last year.
  • Looks like Karl Stefanovic and his wife Jasmine are truly nesting as they lay down roots in their new $3.2 million Castlecrag home.
  • Healthy Burger Joint Grill’d has found themselves in hot water after launching an ad that shows Ronald McDonald ‘flashing’ terrified children. Surely there’s a better way to advertise burgers?

And those are just the intro stories! So don’t go anywhere, as we still have more good reads for you below.

P.S: Do you have any social events coming up this festive season? You can get a FREE face-to-face hour long consultation with an audiologist who can answer any questions you have about hearing loss and hearing aids, and you may be entitled to government subsidies. Have a great day and happy reading!

Simple swaps to save time and money in the kitchen

Medication

I think we can all agree when Choice says that most of the time we’re on autopilot in the kitchen: boiling the kettle for our first cuppa of the day while waking up... thinking about other things while waiting for the toast to pop... unloading the dishwasher while planning the weekend. We are rarely completely ‘present’ in the kitchen.

There's certainly a comfort in doing things the same way every time, and it's hard to break free of old habits. But making a few simple swaps in the kitchen can not only free up your cash but your time as well. Choice has written the a great article on how you can best save money and time in your kitchen.

Research lifts Alzheimer's treatment hopes

Alzheimer's

Research has revealed more about the way Alzheimer’s disease progresses in the brain, upending previously held beliefs. Scientists believe the discovery will help reshape the way the disease is treated in its early stages. The disease has been traditionally thought to originate from a single point in the brain, where a ‘chain reaction’ is started and leads to the death of brain cells. However, an international research team, led by the University of Cambridge, has demonstrated that Alzheimer’s actually reaches several different parts of the brain early.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in Australia, accounting for around 70 per cent of the more than 400,000 dementia sufferers living in the community and this discovery could have a significant impact on them and any Alzheimer’s sufferers to come.

Jokes

(Grand)Dad joke of the day

Paddy was walking down the street when he saw his buddy driving a new Mercedes. Mick pulled up to him with a wide grin on his face.

Paddy said, where did you get this new car from?

“Sue gave it to me,” replied Mick.

“Sue gave it to you. I knew she was sweet on you, but a new Merc?

“Well Paddy let me tell you what happened, we were driving down this country road about 6 in the morning, in the middle of nowhere, she pulled off the road and headed to the woods, she threw off all of her clothes and said Mick take anything you want so I took the car."

"You are a smart man" said Paddy, "them clothes would never have fit you.”

A big thanks to Dennis R for this joke!
