NEWS UPDATE04 October 2024 Publishers noteI’m one who happily praises the services of the many volunteers who keep an eye on us on the water. My comments and praises over the years have always been for the marine rescue, coast guard, and various other on-water services who tend to us when we are in need. This week, I was touched by a story about another type of volunteer. Industry champion and all-round good guy, Craig Evans, posed the question, “What is the value of a club volunteer?”. The answer: they are “priceless”, and rightly so. He says that “if you had to put a figure on it, clubs could not afford the expense.” Craig’s analysis of the situation is quite an eye-opener, and you would be remiss if you didn’t pause to absorb the enormity of the lesson he offers. He also shared a conversation that highlighted how volunteering is not a one-way street. One volunteer explained why “it was his life” and what it meant to him. We have to be grateful for all the volunteers that contribute to this wonderful lifestyle of ours. I have no doubt that Ron, Ray, and George are looking down on our beautiful waterways now. Craig says they “are calling the shots from a start boat in heaven.” Rest in Peace. Fair winds and following seas. I do hope you enjoy this week’s news.
