Tuesday Edition
Hello again, dear members! It’s me, Jarred, here with you again on this terrific Tuesday morning. How have all of you been? It’s been quite a rough start to the week for us here at the SDC with Jonathan and April off sick. I hope this isn’t the karma I talked about when I spent the weekend whinging about Mondays! Join me and the rest of the team in wishing them and other members feeling under the weather a speedy recovery! Get well soon, legends!
Aside from the whinging, I was also up to something rare over the weekend: meeting with my friends! You see, while I wouldn’t call myself a recluse, I am also not the most enthusiastic person when going outside and interacting with the world. Still, I enjoyed meeting some friends I thought I’d never meet again, including a dear one who popped out of the blue last Friday evening asking where everyone was and if they were free for a quick catch-up. Nothing noteworthy about that last bit, certainly. But the thing is, she moved to Canada a few years back and told absolutely no one she was back in our neck of the woods. Without a second thought, I met her and our other mutual friends and had a blast.
Unsolicited life updates from me aside, it’s now time to find out the answer to our most recent riddle, which was:
I can be green or black, I can be bland or sweet. I can be red or yellow, and I’m indeed a treat. What am I?
Ahh! I’m so excited about this one — did you get it? It’s tea! Nothing but good ol’ tea. I was puzzled how something could be either bland or sweet but also be a treat. I was also pleased to find out that other types of tea linked to colours aside from green or black existed! I’ve always been a coffee person, and boy, I was in for an informative trip with this one. If you got the answer correct, head to the bottom of this newsletter for your shout-out!
And now, let’s find out what’s happening across the world and around Australia today:
-
Our beloved Bunnings has been dethroned as Australia’s top retailer this year, but by which store? Is it Woolworths? Kmart? Or ALDI? You might be
surprised…
-
Coles is spicing up the home furniture game by taking on ALDI and Kmart with its new line of luxurious must-haves. The best part? You can style your home for as little as $7!
-
An iconic Aussie ice cream will be seeing a ‘small’ change — and not the good kind. How do you feel about this continuously happening to all our grocery goods?
-
$500 million dollars’ worth of food is at risk of going to waste after the collapse of Australia’s largest cold-chain logistics company, which serviced major retailers like ALDI, Coles, and Woolies. That’s not the worst part.
-
Small bakery, big win: A pastry shop in rural Australia beat over 100 competitors to earn the distinction of having the best version of this
beloved ‘Snot Block’😉. You might want to grab a cuppa for this one!
-
Even ALDI? A shopper at the budget retailer is fuming after their trip to the supermarket resulted in buying 8 items for $45. Would you feel the same way?
-
Dessert lovers, rejoice! Woolworths is dropping a delicious new treat for $9.50, and shoppers are ecstatic. What is the yummy item that has them swooning?
-
A $19 product from Bunnings is causing a stir online after an Aussie mum used it in an ‘accidental’ cleaning hack. Would YOU like to give it a
try?
-
‘They’re chicken-flavoured and crunchy.’ Do you still remember which iconic snack had that jingle? Take a trip down memory lane that started all because of a worn-out packet!
-
A hard-working business owner’s day was ruined by a case of theft that happened under his watch — but what the thief nicked will have you
scratching your head.
-
Beware! A couple learned that a common and convenient device could be dangerous the hard way when it almost set their car on fire. Do YOU have it?
-
Get yourself some healthy chook on a Tuesday with this Greek-inspired twist on a classic recipe!
-
How do you like your eggs? Well, in this hilarious joke from member @mOiOz, you’ll see them served up like never before!
Now how’s that for your Tuesday morning? Great, we hope! But of course, we’d never want to leave you hanging, so as usual, we've got a lot more ahead, including another hilarious joke from member @Luckyus, member @Simmy’s ‘Picture of the Day’, and a trivia question for you number-lovers!
Before I go anywhere, I just want to take a moment to encourage you all to compare your health insurance*. It’s something I’m incredibly grateful for and lucky enough to have. So just a friendly reminder for you to compare your health insurance before April 1*. Why? Because health insurance premiums are increasing by a staggering 2.90%. But don’t worry I have good news: You don’t need to be paying hundreds more for the health cover you have. Over the past 4 years our partners at Compare Club have saved their customers who are over the age of 50 an average of $259.50 on their health insurance*.
For those feeling a bit competitive, don't forget to check out our many games, including our Alphabetical Bands/Groups Game, Alphabetical Australian Places
Game, Change A Letter Game, and 3x3 Word Thread. Of course, we still have our beloved classic games, including Word Pairs, Abbreviation Game, Word Association Game, Rearrange, Add or Subtract Word Game! Keep a Word, Drop a Word Game, and Can you name 5? As well as our Sudoku puzzles, OzGrid, classic OzWord, and our Ozword (expert edition). And our card games, including Solitaire and Blackjack.
Ooh — and we also have our Refer-A-Friend competition ongoing, which you can join if you want to! All you have to do is refer your friends to the SDC (with their permission, of course) for one entry into the competition. The more entries you get into the competition, the more chances you have to win a $100 voucher to Coles, Woolworths, ALDI or IGA! To refer a friend to us, all you have to do is email us their name and email address here! You can also email us at contact@seniorsdiscountclub.com.au. Note: If you email us their name and
email address without their permission, your entry to the competition will be removed.
As always, members, stay safe and happy reading!

Today’s throwback is a picture of kids showing that curiosity is a universal trait of children. These six little cheeky kids were photographed doing their absolute best to spot more of the action in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Sadly, it’s not mentioned what sport they were trying to get a better view of. What is known is that sports like athletics, basketball, and footy were among the events held. You have to admire the tenacity of these youngsters to get their fill of the action — did you notice five of them are using two bikes as
support, and the rightmost one, who also seems the youngest, almost reaching the top of the fence? It does bring back memories of the old days when handheld screens weren’t a thing among children, and when it was a common sight to see them out and about exploring the world. Does this stir similar memories for you? Share them with us here on our Nostalgia/Yesterday’s Australia forum!

Got Health insurance? Your Premiums Are Going Up Yet Again*
A health insurance rate rise of 2.90% is what Aussies are being slapped with during a cost-of-living crisis. We’ve seen mortgage rates increase, grocery prices spike, petrol prices peak, and now our health insurance premiums will be increasing by an average of 2.90%.
From 1 April 2023, Australians over the age of 65 could be paying up to $167* more per year for their health insurance and that’s just for those of you who are not with one of the ‘Big Five’ health insurers - think BUPA, Medibank, HCF, nib and HBF - if you are with one of the ‘Big Five’ you could be paying up to $194* per year for the exact same cover you currently have.
Click the compare now button to see if you can save before April 1.

Birds of Australia
Today’s wonderful image comes from our dear member @Simmy, who happened upon this awesome-looking bird in Western Australia. The ‘very regal-looking Eastern Osprey’ can be seen grasping a branch with its raptor-like claws while it has its sights looking at something in the distance — perhaps prey? There’s a certain mood also set by the overall look of the picture. I’d call it ‘bleak’, for the lack of a
better term, and maybe because of the grey skies beyond the bird. But it does make the Eastern Osprey’s plumage pop! Thank you, member @Simmy! Do you want to see more interesting photos taken by other members? Check out more like this sent in by our members on our Photography forum!

My wife and I were watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed.
I turned to her and said, 'Do you want to have sex?'
'No,' she answered. I then said, 'Is that your final answer…’
Oh, this is a very cheeky joke, but we had to feature it for laughs! Thank you for this one member @oilsfromoz. Now, what became of this rather bold husband…
