Partner Spotlight: DIDO Group

Dido Shipping

Sustainable ship recycling

DIDO Shipping Company and LEYAL Ship Recycling have been pioneers in environmentally responsible ship recycling since the early 1980s. With over 1,000 vessels recycled, including submarines, FPSOs, and aircraft carriers, the group is recognized for its expertise in handling complex projects safely. LEYAL was the first non-European facility to be included in the EU list of approved recycling facilities under Regulation 1257/2013 and was also the first in Turkey to be certified to the IMO Hong Kong Convention for Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships.

World-class facilities and high-profile projects

Located in Aliaga, Turkey, LEYAL’s operations are regulated by Turkish maritime, environmental, and labor authorities, with a stringent “cradle to grave” approach for waste management. The facility is ISO-certified and has been vetted by oil majors such as Chevron, Shell, and ENI. LEYAL has also been involved in high-profile projects, including the recycling of British Navy aircraft carriers HMS Ark Royal and HMS Invincible, and several FPSOs from major global energy companies.

Active participation in international forums

The Group’s leadership in ship recycling extends beyond operations, actively participating in international forums on health, safety, and environmental protection. Their team has contributed to the drafting of global industry standards, including BIMCO’s “green” ship recycling contract, and has participated in various conferences and workgroups under the IMO.

With a focus on quality and sustainability, the Group continues to set the standard for safe, compliant, and environmentally sound ship recycling in Europe and beyond.

Francis Norman reflects on recent visit to Europe

"

I recently had the opportunity to spend a couple of weeks in Europe, with meetings and visits in the UK, Norway, and Denmark as well as attending - as part of the WA delegation - the ONS conference.

Visiting Europe is always an eye opener, the degree of interconnectedness of the industry there and the full acceptance of the need to move to a Net Zero economy as quickly as possible is an inspiring thing to see. As always though there are positive and not-so-positive reflections on both sides.

The combination of the European energy crisis of the past few years and political changes, particularly in the UK are resulting in significant uncertainty around decommissioning timelines and scopes in the North Sea. This situation is of concern to businesses reliant on that basin for their work, but that uncertainty presents an opportunity for Australia where we have reasonable certainty around our current and next phases of decommissioning.

It is clear also that Europe continues to be a leader in research and the development of technologies, particularly in the wells space. So it was wonderful to catch up with CODA partners such as SWIPA, GRaPA, and NZTC to talk about how we can collaborate on identifying and bringing to market solutions to support the industry. Europe is also forging ahead with several carbon sequestration projects, all of which rely on much of the R&D happening there, particularly around wells.

Decommissioning is indeed global, and one where the majority of companies across the entire value chain are open to sharing and partnering, everywhere we go we find partners wanting to engage and bring the best possible ideas and solutions to the many challenges facing the industry. Long may it last.

- Francis Norman, CEO & Managing Director

Building an Australian Decommissioning Waste Facilities Database

Australia is transitioning toward more sustainable management of decommissioning waste, including from the oil and gas sector. Currently, there is no unified national overview of waste management facilities and their capabilities, creating a gap in understanding how the country can handle decommissioning waste domestically.

To address this, we're very excited to share that we are developing an Australian Decommissioning Waste Facilities Database in collaboration with industry and government.

The Waste Facilities Database is an interactive online platform - similar to our Forward Outlook - providing a detailed overview of waste management facilities across Australia. It enables users to explore facilities' locations, capabilities, and licenses, specifically focusing on those that can process decommissioning waste streams, such as hydrocarbons, mercury, NORMS, and PFAS-contaminated materials. The database consolidates data from public domain sources and surveys of waste facilities, making it the most comprehensive resource for the Australian decommissioning sector.

We will be releasing the database very soon, so stay tuned for further information.

New podcast episode: Decommissioning & sustainable ship recycling

In our latest episode of Plugging Away, CODA CEO Francis Norman explores the current state of global ship recycling with Kostas Galanis, Director at DIDO Shipping Group and Chairman of the International Ship Recycling Association. Kostas shares insights on environmental and safety standards shaping the industry, the enforcement of the Hong Kong Convention, and the role of circular economies in ship recycling.

We also dive into the complexities of recycling oil and gas assets like FPSOs and FSOs, emphasising the importance of collaboration and early decommissioning planning.

Reminder - Xplore challenge #2 now live

We are currently seeking technology solutions for the remote detection of hydrocarbons and pressure below environmental plugs before well re-entry for final abandonment.

If the absence of hydrocarbons and associated pressure build-up below the environmental plug could be confirmed prior to well re-entry, it creates the opportunity for rigless abandonment operations. In the offshore environment, this potentially removes one of the biggest challenges associated with well abandonment - timely access to rigs in a highly competitive global market.

Call for solutions to this challenge closes on Thursday 31st October 2024.
