Looks like 2023 is turning into a year of retrenchment and consolidation across media and tech — big media has gone through this before, but for many in big tech this will be new. And sport may not be immune, with UEFA set to allow multi-football club ownership within its competitions for the first time, and Endeavor aiming to be the LVMH of sports assets (source: Roger Mitchell) with the purchase of WWE alongside UFC. 

In forthcoming editions of our newsletter, we will be looking at the rationale for consolidation and retrenchment from a cost and revenue perspective as we help our clients navigate a challenging period.

Are Twickenham rugby tickets worth the price?

As this newsletter shows, we write quite a lot of articles. Reasoned, cerebral pieces about pricing and data and game theory.  And yet, of all those we have produced, the one that has stimulated the most reaction, the most engagement, and the most onward sharing was a piece Sean rushed out in the aftermath of an England rugby match. Sean thought twice about posting it – never post when angry or emotional – but in hindsight we are glad he did..

Because in it, there’s a serious point – sports are part of the entertainment industry and need to constantly improve their offer, or risk getting left behind by better, more agile, more informed competitors.

• Andrew Ladbrook is our new Head of Strategy. Andrew will be responsible for supporting our clients to identify new opportunities, build on their strengths to grow in challenging markets, and formulate long-term plans that deliver success. Andrew previously worked at Paramount as Director of Strategy and, before that, Director of Strategy and Business Transformation at Freesat, a BBC and ITV joint venture.
• Aaron D'Souza recently joined us as a Consultant. Aaron was previously Chief of Staff to the CEO at Global Markets Consultants, management consultancy in the financial services industry. After graduating with an MBA from Cambridge Judge Business School in 2021, he worked as a strategy consultant for clients in the financial services, media, sport and technology sectors. Outside of work, Aaron is Trustee of UK Youth and an elected independent Councillor in the City of London.
