Welcome to Perth NRM e-News Welcome to the June edition of the Perth NRM Newsletter in the Noongar season of Makuru. Makuru is the coldest and wettest part of the year. Fire is important during the season, not only for warmth but also for food preparation. Read on below for exciting updates to our projects, and upcoming events! BEHIND THE SCENES: COASTAL VIDEOS TO INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION A dynamic video series celebrating coastal conservation will soon be showcased to students and volunteers across the region. Supported by the State NRM Program and Coastwest, these videos explain why dune restoration matters and showcase the incredible work of local volunteers. Filmed along Perth’s beautiful coastline, the series features real community action — including local legend ‘Coastcare Craig.’ Two videos are tailored for school excursions, offering practical tips on beach safety and planting techniques. These engaging resources will soon be shared with schools, Coastcare groups, and local governments. Follow us and help spread the word about coastal care! CARBON FARMING: FROM THE GROUND UP On Thursday 1st May Perth NRM and RegenWA hosted a Carbon Farming Outreach Program workshop at the Chinkabee Complex, Bindoon. The 25 workshop attendees heard independent, unbiased advice on Carbon Farming from Chris Wyhoon (Campfire Agri), on topics such as: Monitoring and reducing GHG emissions: The how and the why, Making soil carbon work for you: Unlocking economic opportunities There was also a presentation from Bonnie Jupp, RegenWA Program Manager, on Natural Capital Accounting insights such as: Measuring and managing on-farm natural capital: The practicalities and the payoffs Lively discussion on carbon farming and what do farmers really need to know came from the very engaged audience, including Joc Dwyer, local Bindoon farmer and 2025 Soil Health Champion. SAF UPDATE The weather is starting to turn! As we leave beautiful Djeran and enter the Noongar season of Makuru, the rains and cooler weather start to roll in from the West – a much needed relief for our farmers and wildlife! YOUTH CONSERVING A THREATENED ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITY Inspiring young people to respect and nurture nature is critical for the future health of natural areas. Dwerda Weelardinup (Cantonment Hill), an important cultural and natural heritage site, is benefiting from action by Walyalup (Fremantle) high schools’ students around. CBC Fremantle recently planted seedlings of key species of Honeymyrtle Threatened Ecological Community to help counter the long hot droughts that have impacted the mature vegetation. Perth NRM is pleased to partner with the Friends of Cantonment Hill, local high schools, the City of Fremantle on conservation initiatives supported with funding from the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program. Bruce Almighty Returns! Bruce Ivers, who has planted half a million native seedlings over his lifetime, was recently featured in an article published by the Waroona Reporter. The story covers his involvement in an upcoming documentary project facilitated by Perth NRM and his insights on Collective Impact. Read the full article below! 📸: Craig Duncan Help Protect our Owls! When owls eat rodents poisoned by anticoagulant rodenticides, they can experience secondary poisoning - which often leads to severe illness or even death. Murdoch University is conducting a 15 minute survey to understand: factors contributing to rodenticide usage, community awareness, and barriers to adopting owl-safe rodent control. 📸: William Betts Preparing for H5 Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) The Australian Government is preparing for a highly contagious strain of bird flu that is not in Australia but has spread quickly across the world. For national updates and preparedness resources visit the Australian Government’s website below EVENTS Build a Nest Box with Re-Cyc-Ology (Rockingham)Join the ReWild Perth team and special guest Simon Cherriman from the Re-Cyc-Ology Project for a fun and hands-on Nest Box Workshop. Learn about the importance of hollows, how we can support local wildlife in our communities, and then roll up your sleeves to help build nest boxes under expert guidance. 📆 Wednesday 4 June | 🕤 2:00pm - 5:00pm | 📍 Baldivis Indoor Sports ComplexWinter Mornings, Coastal Care – Come Plant with Us!Planting season is here, and we’re heading to the coast! Join Perth NRM and our coastal partners for a hands-on morning restoring Perth’s precious dune systems. These family-friendly events are a fantastic way to connect with nature, meet great people, and help protect our coastline. No experience needed — we’ll provide the tools and guidance, just bring your enthusiasm. With events running most weekends in June and July, there are plenty of chances to get involved. Help Restore Wooroloo BrookJoin us for two community planting days to help restore the Wooroloo Brook, which was ravaged by fire in 2021. This is a free, family friendly event! Please register for catering and if we need to notify you of an event date change.
