The Western Australian Government is backing the growth of tropical agriculture in the State's north, unveiling a $2.5 million upgrade to scientific facilities in Kununurra. Improvements to four laboratories at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's (DPIRD) Frank Wise Institute of Tropical Agriculture will help expand irrigated agriculture and beef production across the Kimberley and Pilbara. The revamped laboratories will support research across horticulture cropping systems, cotton, grain, and fodder production. A fit-for-purpose seed cleaning and processing facility, humidity-controlled cool room, general purpose laboratory, and drying area for soil and plant material are also part of the redevelopment. The Kununurra research facility has been pivotal in supporting the development of WA's northern agriculture industry for 77 years. There are now more than 20 collaborative research projects under way at the site, including hemp, plantago, mango, safflower, cassava, and cotton. The facility is also home to the WA Agricultural Research Collaboration's Cropping Enabled Cattle project, exploring cattle feed systems in the north. Agriculture production in the Ord River Irrigation Area is important to the State's economy, with a direct contribution from irrigated crops and sandalwood valued at $230 million per annum. More... Fisheries experts from around the world are in Western Australia this week to share the latest information on lobster and crab biology and Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management. Since the late 1990s, WA has led the way as one of the first jurisdictions in the world to manage fisheries on ecologically sustainable principles, and holistic management of fisheries and marine resources that take the entire ecosystem into account. In the year 2000, WA became an international leader in fisheries sustainability with our West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery becoming the very
first fishery in the world to receive the gold standard Marine Stewardship Council eco tick. Since then, it's been re-certified as sustainable a record five times and served as a model for other fisheries. Supported by Western Rock Lobster and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, the event
also embraces research on deep sea and estuarine crab fisheries. Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development scientists and managers are showcasing WA fisheries research and management at the 12th International Lobster and Crab Conference in Fremantle from 23 to 27 October. The world will need to produce more protein, more sustainably, from more sources into the future, according to the CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency. The agency says its goal is to leverage increasing global demand for high quality protein and create new Australian protein products and ingredients that earn an additional $10 billion in revenue by 2030. The global population will reach 9.7 billion by 2050, fuelling the demand for protein. As a major producer and exporter of protein, Australia can capitalise on this demand by capturing high value, high margin export market opportunities. This will build Australia's sovereign manufacturing capability and create new jobs.
Australia's food industry is well placed to develop innovative, differentiated protein products that meet consumer trends and changing dietary preferences. More... Source and Photo: CSIRO
