Visit Harper’s at Asia NOW Paris, booth S12, for a presentation of work by the late Korean painter, Young-Il Ahn, and new paintings by Korean-American artist, Wendy Park.

Upon moving to Los Angeles in the 1960s, Ahn was influenced by the aesthetics of color field painting, popular among his contemporaries in California and in Korea. For the past two decades, Ahn applied this approach to abstraction to embody water across meditative monochromatic paintings. 

Alongside Ahn’s introspective Water series, Harper’s will feature a collection of new figurative paintings by Wendy Park. Park renders the food, utensils, and condiments that adorn familiar scenes of Korean-American life through a panoply of animated hues and brilliant marks. 

Implementing two divergent vehicles of storytelling, Park and Ahn reveal a shared curiosity for diasporic reckoning. When presented together, Park’s memory-driven works and Ahn’s pensive abstractions invite viewers to contemplate the relics, remnants, and affects that color transnational belonging.
