Fresh funding to help Western Australian farmers' markets to grow and thrive will soon be available under a new grant program from the WA Government. Grants of up to $50,000 will be on offer to assist metropolitan and regional farmers' markets with operational costs and business sustainability. Farmers' markets operate across WA, from Geraldton to Albany and throughout the Perth metropolitan area, supporting local farmers and producers to connect directly with customers. These markets attract a range of food and artisan businesses, from fruit and vegetables, to seafood, meat and dairy products, to olive oil and honey, through to personal care products, plants and gifts. This new funding is the latest initiative from the WA Government to support the State's agrifood and beverage sector. The farmers' market grants build on the Government's investment in WA's local value-added industry through the successful Value Add Investment Grants and Agrifood and Beverage Voucher programs and the Buy West Eat Best initiative. Australian farmers are well positioned for another strong year of exports, with a range of tariff cuts providing new and improved access to major markets. Australia’s network of free trade agreements has continued to deliver valuable opportunities for our red meat, grain, seafood, horticulture and other agricultural industries. This includes free trade agreements with the United Kingdom and India, and the recently signed trade agreement with the United Arab Emirates which will deliver even more market access opportunities when implemented. The Federal Government’s trade policy agenda of trade diversification has successfully created more global market access
opportunities. As a result of market access improvements and the hard work of Aussie farmers, agriculture exports are forecast to reach $70.1 billion in 2024–25, the third highest figure on record. Trade is a job creator – one in four Australian jobs are connected to trade and jobs associated with exports have 10 per cent higher average annual incomes. “Trade is critically important to agriculture, and by strengthening the sector we create new opportunities for small business and regional communities, and importantly higher paying jobs both directly in agriculture and across the supply chain,” said Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Julie Collins MP. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (the department) will continue to work to regulate the welfare of sheep exported live by sea until the trade ends on 1 May 2028. Regulation of live sheep exports by sea will continue under the existing arrangements without caps or quotas until the trade ends. The department develops and maintains high standards that licensed exporters are required to meet before, during, and after livestock export. The department regulates the livestock export industry to ensure it meets Australian export legislation, the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL), and the requirements of importing countries. The ASEL sets out the conditions for livestock health and welfare that licensed exporters must meet throughout the entire export supply chain. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is responsible for the regulation and safety oversight of Australia's shipping fleet, as well as management of Australia's international maritime obligations. No livestock export consignment, sheep or otherwise, is permitted to depart Australia by sea unless AMSA has officially certified the exporting vessel as safe and appropriate to transport livestock. In
addition to the ASEL and AMSA, for certain sea voyages we may also require an independent observer to accompany the voyage. More information about the regulations and standards can be found here. Source and image: DAFF
