Kaya ,

It is with mixed emotions that I share the news that I am moving on from my role as Managing Director of Tourism Western Australia. After careful consideration and reflection, I have decided to embark on a new journey, accepting a leadership position in Western Australia’s tourism and hospitality sector.

Over the past two and a half years, it has been an incredible privilege to serve in the role of Managing Director at Tourism WA. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones in fortifying the Western Australian visitor economy. One of the proudest achievements has been the significant increase in visitor spend, reaching a record-breaking $17.7 billion – a phenomenal 31 per cent ahead of pre-COVID levels in 2019.

Among our many accomplishments, some notable highlights include:

  • Launching the Western Australia Visitor Economy Strategy (WAVES) 2033, with a goal to increase visitor spend to $25 billion by 2033.
  • Creating Western Australia’s new global tourism brand, Walking On A Dream, which has already achieved $424 million in estimated economic impact for the state through global marketing partnerships.
  • Sponsoring our highest ever volume of events, launching the Vision for Dream Events and injecting an outstanding $206 million in economic impact from Tourism WA supported events.
  • Delivering the WA Cruise Tourism Strategic Plan, Jina Plan, National Parks Tourism Experience Development Package and Tourism Workforce Development Program.
  • Supporting the resumption and launch of nonstop flights between 19 international destinations and Perth, strengthening our reputation as the Western Gateway to Australia.

These achievements would not have been possible without the steadfast support of tourism and hospitality businesses across the state, along with our partners and all those who contribute to tourism in various capacities.

Throughout my tenure, I have had the pleasure of interacting with numerous operators across Western Australia. Witnessing their dedication and passion firsthand fills me with optimism for the industry’s ongoing growth and success on the global stage.

I am pleased to share that Steph Underwood will be stepping into the role of Acting Managing Director while the agency initiates the recruitment process for a permanent Managing Director. Your support to Steph during this transitioning period is greatly appreciated.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your unwavering dedication and commitment to the growth of Western Australia’s exceptional tourism industry.

Warm regards,

Carolyn Turnbull
Managing Director
