Monday Edition
G’day and happy Monday, everyone! We’re beginning the 13th week of the year (we checked!), and I (Jarred) hope everyone is doing well. I swear this wasn’t planned, I just happened to think about how many weeks we are in, in the year and surprise, surprise, it’s lucky number 13. I’m not superstitious, but for those who are, know that we here at the Seniors Discount Club are sending you good energy throughout the week!
That aside, first of all, I’m absolutely loving the responses to our question, ‘What makes you happy to be Australian?’. Reading them all feels like seeing everything in a new light and makes appreciating life Down Under — the bad sides, but especially the good sides — easier. If you haven’t shared your thoughts already, don’t be shy and join the conversation! We’re already thanking you in advance.
Ah, and of course, this week’s first riddle. Are you ready, riddle masters? Here it is:
Where can everyone sit except you?
How’s that? Tricky, isn’t it? It took some time for me to guess this one, and I thank the heavens above that I don’t need to answer riddles for a living… Anyway, take a crack at answering this one and post your answers on the forum, as always, if you get the answer correct, you’ll get a much-deserved shout-out in tomorrow’s newsletter! Good luck, riddle masters!
In the meantime, let’s find out what’s happening across the world and around Australia today, shall we?
-
A mum was livid when she found out what a basic shop at Woolworths cost her. Is the retailer guilty of ‘daylight robbery’? You be the judge.
-
Craving some seafood but concerned about your budget? Fret not! Here’s how you can enjoy the bounty of the sea for less, according to an expert source.
-
Speaking of seafood, a $10 Kmart item is being hailed as a ‘game-changer’ because it makes whipping up a beloved dish easier by leaps and bounds. What’s all the fuss about?
-
It’s icky, it’s annoying, it’s dirty grout! If you’ve been having problems keeping your bathroom tiles shiny and spotless, the solution might be available at your nearest Bunnings. What is this dirt-busting product?
-
An Aussie mum is now short $11,000 after she fell victim to a scam notorious for targeting parents. It all started with a message…
-
‘You don’t need eggs, milk, butter - anything.’ Shoppers at Coles and Woolies are going crazy over a $2.90 cake hack which uses just two ingredients to satisfy anyone’s sweet cravings. Will you be trying this?
-
Paint on fabric? A Kmart shopper has divided social media when her ‘odd’ upcycling hack went viral. Would you be willing to try this unconventional DIY trick?
-
A woman who left for England 70 years ago took a chance and sent a letter to her old address in Australia for old time’s sake. What happened next will have you in for an emotional ride.
-
An unusual hack that went viral solved a very frustrating problem for travellers struggling to keep their items in place. The secret? A very unlikely item that's dirt-cheap!
-
Getting rid of your old frying pan that has seen some years? Don’t! One mum has a trick to make it shiny and as good-as-new. Did we mention all it
takes is $2?
-
A couple was shocked after finding out a 'bizarre' $8000 excess council bin charge that went unnoticed for over a decade — and that’s not all of it. Could you be getting overcharged too?
-
We’re all about finding recipes that are easy to prepare and delicious. Well, this one is fit for brekky, lunch, or dinner and is as
simple and yummy as can be!

Who’s up for another blast from the past? I sure am! Today’s fix of nostalgia comes from member @Wandiwa, who shared this very interesting photograph of two kids seemingly reading the words spelt out on the blackboard. What’s so interesting about that, you ask? Well, the little boy on the right is member @Wandiwa! He said that at the time, they were being taught to read using the Initial Teaching Alphabet (ITA) reading technique. This method of learning, which used up to 45 symbols to represent the different sounds of the English
vocabulary, was apparently popular at the time. It didn’t catch on though, according to member @Wandiwa. Regardless, we’re thankful for this simple photograph and the slice of time it forever captures. Do you remember the ITA reading method too? If you have similar photographs of days past, we have just the place for you! Feel free to post on our Nostalgia/Yesterday’s Australia forum and reminisce about the good ol’ days.

Got Health insurance? Your Premiums Are Going Up Yet Again*
A health insurance rate rise of 2.90% is what Aussies are being slapped with during a cost-of-living crisis. We’ve seen mortgage rates increase, grocery prices spike, petrol prices peak, and now our health insurance premiums will be increasing by an average of 2.90%.
From 1 April 2023, Australians over the age of 65 could be paying up to $167* more per year for their health insurance and that’s just for those of you who are not with one of the ‘Big Five’ health insurers - think BUPA, Medibank, HCF, nib and HBF - if you are with one of the ‘Big Five’ you could be paying up to $194* per year for the exact same cover you currently have.

Echinopsis subdenudata Tufty
Now, for the picture of the day! It’s this lovely flower blooming in member @SimonBlack10’s photograph (some would say it’s in his garden, but you get the point, haha! 😉). Echinopsis subdenudata, also known as the Easter Lily Cactus, is quite a looker, as you can see. The
almost-translucent petals and the pale yellow centre make a beautiful combination, and I envy him because it’s a sight he wakes up to daily when the blooms are in season. Thank you, member @SimonBlack10! If you also want to show off some of your photographs, you can post on our Photography forum, everyone!

Heath Ledger was an avid chess player, winning an Australian Junior Chess Championship when he was 10. He said he made it a point to play at least one game a day in an interview many years later. It also seems Ledger’s passion for the game never faltered, as former competitors he faced well into adulthood in New York, USA’s Washington Square Park recalled that the unassuming actor would get into cheeky trash-talking during casual matches.
