NEWS UPDATE21 July 2023 Publishers noteWe recently reported the Marine Rescue NSW stats which showed the record number of interventions in the 12 months to 30 June 2023. On the other side of the ledger, we are pleased to read the news from Acting NSW Maritime Executive Director Cherrie Ashford where it has been reported that NSW has recorded its lowest number of fatalities in five years. Keeping the conversation going about Marine Rescue interventions, as well the data on the sad deaths on our waterways I feel is important. No one wants any deaths and the Maritime Safety Plan target of zero fatalities or serious injuries on our waterways by 2056 is admirable. The truth is that is we all wish that we could stop any deaths or injuries today. Whilst history provides us with data and statistics, some of which we don’t like, the reality is that as an industry we learn from them, and they better empower us all to do our part to help education our boating community. I remain a proud advocate for boating safety, and to this day I continue to use the catch cry “Watch the weather, if in doubt don’t go out, and remember safe boating is good boating and that a Lifejacket never ruined a day on the water”. These slogans were developed by people way smarter than me, and I unashamedly use them whenever and wherever I can.
