New year, more NSCAD Alumni! As summer winds down and we look ahead to the start of a new academic year, we're excited to celebrate the incredible work happening across the NSCAD alumni community. We know many of you have been busy creating, exhibiting, launching projects, and reaching new milestones, and we'd love to share those successes with fellow alumni. Call for nominations: The NSCAD Alumni Association Board has two available director positions. Nominations are open. Please nominate yourself or another alum who you feel would be a strong representative of the NSCAD alumni community. Nominations are open until September 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. (Atlantic Time). Following the nomination period, alumni will be invited to vote for their preferred candidates in advance of the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, October 6. To nominate a NSCAD alum for the Board, please fill in this nomination form.

 

Alumni @ Work Virtual Talk: Join fashion designer Matthew Brown (BFA 2026) and celebrity fashion stylist, costume designer and creative consultant Akshay Tyagi (BFA 2008), as they share insider stories about their styling well known celebs and creating looks for high profile Bollywood actors, professional athletes, well-known musicians and more. Mentors wanted: If NSCAD changed your life, we want to hear from you! We're piloting a mentoring program for NSCAD alumni to connect with first year students. This opportunity is open to alumni in the Halifax area for in-person meetings, as well as other locations for virtual mentoring. Award: The Hnatyshyn Foundation has selected Crystal Mowry (MFA 2003) as the recipient of the 2026 Mid-Career Award for Excellence in  Curatorial Excellence. The award, valued at $20,000, recognizes professionals who have demonstrated excellence and innovation in their bodies of work and who show promise of outstanding artistic or curatorial achievement in the years ahead. The selection committee was moved by Mowry’s sincere commitment to the artists and communities at the centre of her work, both in her institutional roles at the MacKenzie Art Gallery and Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, and as an independent curator. Alumna profile: For Dr. Martha Langford (BFA 1975), documenting the history, impact, and influences of Canadian photography is more than a job—it’s her life’s work. Langford has dedicated her career to shining a spotlight on photography as its own form of art and expression. Drawing on decades of research and expertise, Martha is currently undertaking her most ambitious project to date: a landmark three-volume history of Canadian photography spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Her first book, A History of Photography in Canada Volume 1. Anticipation to Participation, 1839-1918, was published in 2025 and spans early days following the invention of photography, to its wide application during World War I. This fall, Langford is set to publish the second book in the series: A History of Photography in Canada, Volume 2: A Medium Unleashed (1919-1969). Atlantic International Film Festival: Homeless to Home, a short animated film by Andrea Dorfman (BFA 1995), is part of the Reel East Coast Shorts program at the 2026 Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF). The animated film was created in 2025 for Dalhousie University's School of Social Work based on a 2021-2025 research study examining long term trajectories in the transition away from youth homelessness in four cities across Canada. AIFF runs September 16 to 23 in Halifax, NS. Order of Nova Scotia: Mi'kmaw visual artist, author, musician, and Elder Alan Syliboy (1975) has been named to the Order of Nova Scotia for his contributions to Indigenous art, cultural preservation, and the promotion of Mi'kmaw language, history, and traditions. The Order of Nova Scotia is the highest honour in the Province of Nova Scotia, recognizing people in many fields of endeavour who have distinguished themselves and made lasting contributions. Award: Karen Stentaford (2000-2001) is the winner of the 16th annual Scotiabank Photography Award. Stentaford will receive a $50,000 cash prize, a solo Primary Exhibition at The Image Centre, and a published book of her work. "This award recognizes artists whose work expands possibilities of photography while contributing meaningfully to contemporary cultural conversations. Karen's practice reflects a remarkable sensitivity to landscape, memory, and perception, inviting viewers into moments of quiet attention and reflection." said Jacqui Allard, Group Head, Global Wealth Management, Scotiabank. Exhibition: Ezra Saad (BFA 2026) is part of a current exhibition of media artworks called What Remains that includes videos, sound art, projection mapping, kinetic sculpture and more. The exhibition brings together works that reflect on endings and persistence, exploring grief, memory, biology, defence mechanisms, and the shifting boundaries between the personal and the planetary. What Remains runs until September 19 and is presented by This Town Is Small at the Hilda Woolnough Gallery inside The Arts Guild,111 Queen St., Charlottetown, PE. Read more.

 

Book: Michael Eddy (BFA 2004) Written with great humour and self-awareness, Koh-i-Noor is a satirical coming-of-age tale about a well-intentioned young man determined to change the world.Michael Eddy's debut novel offers readers a fast-paced adventure through the diverging nuances of economics, spirituality, and extraction. In a period of increasing uncertainty, Koh-i-Noor is a timely doomscroll through four decades of globalization, generational change, and the search for one’s own values. Michael Eddy will be holding a Halifax book launch in late October or early November. Stay tuned for details! Read more.

 

Exhibition: On the Threshold, an art installation by Marie-Soleil Provençal (BFA 2021), will be on display at the Craig Gallery  from August 27 to September 27 2026. Presented in collaboration with the Maritime Modern Quilt Guild and the Mayflower Quilters Guild, the exhibition celebrates quilting not only as a craft, but as a living practice of community, resilience, and care. There will be an opening reception Thursday, August 27 from 5–7 p.m. as well as an artist talk Saturday, August 29, 12–1 p.m. The guilds will lead activities Sunday, August 30, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. The Craig Gallery is in Alderney Landing, 2 Ochterloney St, Dartmouth, NS. Exhibition: Paradise Lost is a dual solo exhibition featuring work by Jazz Keillor (MFA 2023) and Laura St. Pierre. The exhibition reflects on ecological crisis, hybridity, and the shifting boundaries between human and nonhuman life. St. Pierre’s installations and photographs imagine post-apocalyptic ecosystems and uncertain futures shaped by environmental collapse, while Keillor’s paintings present landscapes from a distant, bird’s-eye perspective, where trees become central characters. Creating “other spaces” marked by tension, uncertainty, and transformation, the works invite viewers to move beyond human-centred thinking toward a more inclusive and relational understanding of existence. Award: Fashion designer and Alumni Association Board member Donn Sabean (BFA 2016) received the Sustainable Design Icon award as part of the fifth annual Halifax Fashion Week earlier this month. Donn creates one-of-a-kind layered designed from hand-dyed and vintage silks with a zero- to low-waste approach. Congratulations Donn! Read more.

 

Exhibition: Duane Jones' (BDes 2004) first solo show as a member of Hermes Gallery runs throughout August. I am. I was is a collection of works that explores Duane's early aspirations to feel safe, secure and respected by developing the physique and abilities of comic book characters, and the ‘80s/’90s action stars who personified them. I am. I was. asks the viewer to consider who we are when something that we have made a core part of our identity no longer serves us. There will be an artist talk on Sunday, August 30, 3 pm. The exhibition runs until August 30 at Hermes Art Gallery Cooperative Limited, 5682 North Street, Halifax, NS. Read more.

Exhibition: Weiwei Li (BFA 2025) and Zhangchi (Kai) Shen (BFA 2026), and Christy Guo (current student) are among the artists featured in the 2026 Annual National Jewellery Student Competition. An exhibition of the students' work is on display until September 4 at L.A. Pai GALLERY, 497 Sussex Drive. Read more.

 

Award: NSCAD Design RPT faculty Jayme Spinks (MDes 2015) has won another award for their work on the book piyyut, which was written by faculty member Sol Nagler and illustrated by Angela Henderson (MFA 2016). piyyut received the AIGA 50 books/50 covers award for excellence in overall book design. A jury of six designers, educators, and creative directors spent two days in-person evaluating 536 entries from 29 countries. From this in-person judging, 100 winners were selected for this award. The AIGA 50 books/50 covers award is considered one of most prestigious book design awards globally. A copy of the book will be archived in the AIGA collection at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University’s Butler Library in New York.  Read more.

Exhibition: The Blue Building is currently spotlighting six new and returning artists as part of its Summer 2026 group exhibition, Pieces. Tim Brennan (BFA 1995), Kayza DeGraff-Ford (BFA 2021), Ursula Johnson (BFA 2006), and Yujia Shi will exhibit along side B. Brookbank and Tyshan Wright for the first time. The exhibition runs until August 22 at The Blue Building 2482 Maynard Street, Halifax, NS. Read more.

 

Exhibition: Work by Laura Roy (BFA 2012, VAC 2017) is part of an exhibition called What the Mirror Doesn't See. Laura explains the inspiration for her work, "Through many years of figuring out medication [dosage] and learning how to heal/navigate from CPTSD [complex post traumatic stress disorder], I am able to find and create an understanding of the trauma I experienced by embroidering, sewing, illustrating and sculpting memories, and feelings into art pieces." The exhibition runs until Friday, August 28 at Saint John Arts Centre, 20 Peel Plaza, Saint John, NB. Read more.

 

Exhibition: Ceramics and paintings by Sera Senakovitz (BFA 2009) are featured in a new exhibition at the Chester Art Centre. Tender the Garden centres around Sera's work as a ceramist, painter and gardener, using inspiration from her own garden to depict the growth, resilience, community and determination  within the space. Four large scale oil paintings act as keystones of the exhibition, with 80 sgraffito ceramic pots decorated with similar imagery to the paintings. All the pieces play with the real and imagined inhabitants and visitors to the garden including depictions of plants, insects and birds. There will be an opening reception Thursday, August 20 from 5-7 p.m.. The exhibition runs August 20 to September 8 at the Chester Art Centre, 60 Queen St, Chester, NS. Read more.

 

Exhibition: Lili Maud Dobell (BFA 2025) and Eric-Olivier Theriault (BFA 2024) presented their work this month at the Estonian pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale. The House of Leaking Sky by Merike Estna is hosting The School of Strange Weather, a series of experimental interventions by students of Contemporary Art MA from the Estonian Academy of Arts, where Estna has been a professor since August 2025. The two are among the young artists from the Estonian Academy of Arts with works ranging from daily acts of care for one another as well as the space they have been invited to inhabit as guests, to longer durational movement pieces, unfolding both inside and outside the decommissioned church, now serving as both a community centre and an art pavilion. Exhibition: Otherwise is a thought-provoking group exhibition featuring Nova Scotia artists Bonnie Baker (1980), Sheri Hancock (ANSCAD 1994), Sydney Lancaster & Julie Rosvall (2012-2015). This collection of new work revels in texture and process. Place and history inform the artists' approach. The transformations of time, awareness of tradition, craft, and the relationships to (and between) materials inform this exhibition, revealing each artist's unique approach to seeing other-wise.The exhibition runs until September 13 at Harvest Gallery, 462 Main Street

Workshop: NSCAD ceramics instructor Toni Losey (BFA 2018) is one of three distinguished contemporary Canadian ceramic artists who will share their creative processes, techniques, and artistic approaches in a series of workshops at Escuela Nacional de Ceramica in Tapalpa, Jalisco. México. Toni Losey's workshop is From part to whole: modular organic sculpture runs  November 28 to December 12, 2027

New works by Chris Dorosz (MFA 1997) are part of a solo exhibition called Person Painted People. The exhibition showcases the artists innovative approach to figurative image-making, bringing together two distinctive bodies of work that blur conventional distinctions between painting and sculpture. The exhibition runs September 1 to 26, 2026, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 12 from 4-6 p.m. at Scott Richards Contemporary Art, 501 Pacific Avenue, San Francisco, CA. As part of NSCAD's 125th anniversary celebrations, the NSCAD Alumni Association celebrated the accomplishments of founder Anna Leonowens with her descendants, great grandson Louis and great great granddaughter Lucy.

 
 

Shortlisted film: NSCAD student Adrian Feng's AI short film Am I A Salted Fish? was selected as a finalist for the 2026 KTOWN International Film Festival in Los Angeles. Created as part of his Master of Arts in Art Education research at NSCAD, the three-minute music video was scripted and storyboarded by Adrian before bringing it to life with a mix of Sora Generative AI and live footage. Adrian's research considers the possibility of emerging technologies not just as tools for creation but as a way to bridge the creative gap.  Adrien credits his time at NSCAD and the mentorship of assistant professor Dr. Nicole Lee, with helping him bring the project to completion. "She really encouraged me to push the boundaries of my work and take risks, and it helped me to understand how to think critically, not just as an artist but also as an educator,"Adrian said. Read more.

 
 

Call for applications: AFCOOP provides three awards annually at the Atlantic International Film Festival in September to support projects of three Atlantic Canadian filmmakers (not restricted to Nova Scotia). Call for applications: Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts celebrate the vibrant arts community in Canada and recognize remarkable careers in the visual and media arts. Up to eight awards are distributed every year: six awards recognize artistic achievements, one award recognizes an exceptional fine craft artist (Saidye Bronfman Award) and one award recognizes an outstanding contribution to contemporary visual arts, media arts or fine craft. The winners all receive a medallion and a cash prize of $25,000 each. The deadline to apply is October 7, 2026. Read more.

 

Call for submissions: DesignTO and Le Germain Hotel Toronto Mercer are pleased to present the Artist Sojourn Program, a site-specific program that culminates in a public exhibition as part of the 2027 DesignTO Festival and builds on the success of their past Artist-in-Residence Program. Two successful applicants will immerse themselves in the environment of Le Germain Hotel Toronto Mercer over the course of a weekend stay in October/November 2026. During this time, artists will develop proposals for artworks to be displayed in the hotel lobby (including adjacent spaces). The final artworks will be jointly exhibited during the DesignTO Festival (January 22 – 31, 2027) through March 1, 2027, with a reception hosted by Le Germain Hotel Toronto Mercer during the Festival. Submission deadline is

Job opportunity: The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is hiring for a TD Assistant Curatorial Fellowship. Reporting to the Manager of Exhibitions, the Assistant Curator supports the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia's (AGNS) exhibitions program. Their role in the Curatorial division is to assist in the development and delivery of exhibitions of contemporary and Canadian art, with a special focus on artists historically underrepresented in the museum sector, furthering the Gallery's research in this field. Call for submissions: Halifax Design Festival invites submissions for events, exhibitions, talks, tours, workshops, and installations to be presented as official festival programming. The Halifax Design Festival is a new non profit event run by Alissa Kloet (BFA 2011), Andrea Tsang Jackson and Sara L'Esperance. Halifax Design Festival will take place April 22–25, 2027, bringing together designers, architects, craftspeople, educators, manufacturers, curators, and the public to celebrate what is being made here, and explore what it means to design for this place and this community. Call for submissions: BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, working with Aartplace and HOST Consulting, is inviting artists and artist teams living and/or working in British Columbia and the Yukon to apply for the CHEP Artist Roster for Murals, Glass + Wall Art. The roster will support 11 integrated art opportunities comprising up to 50 art commissions throughout the new BC Children’s Hospital centre for health complexity in Vancouver. Opportunities include digitally produced murals, painted murals, glass/window film artworks, participatory or community-based murals, and framed or wall-based artworks. Call for submissions: The Ontario Clay and Glass Association is pleased to invite emerging visual artists to submit wall-mounted visual artwork for the consideration in the Henry Goodman Exhibition for Emerging Artists. The theme of the exhibition is Gathering. Selected pieces will be shown alongside ceramic and glass work by FUSION members at Neilson Park Creative Arts in Etobicoke, ON from September 21 to October 11, 2026. Artist Talk: Ceramist Yves Paquette (BFA 1989) will deliver a pubic lecture in Lunenburg called Moving Parts. The talk explores the connection between his artistic career and his teaching philosophy. He maps his evolution as both a working artist and an educator, sharing how studio breakthroughs and classroom insights constantly shape and redefine each other. The lecture will be Thursday, August 27th, 2026 at 7 pm at the Lunenburg School of the Arts, 6 Prince Street, Lunenburg, NS. Read more.
