No images? Click here July newsThe shortest day of the year has passed us and sadly so has our time with the wonderful Josh. Josh's cool demeanour, unparalleled fashion sense, aplomb and genuinely kind and funny personality will be missed greatly by the staff and board and we wish him every happiness on his travels and future adventures. Chippie say's 'There's always a spot for you here mate!'Josh, the master of many things as he was known, spent tireless hours installing and perfecting our new 'mood lights' in the main bar. A long time dream of Penny's has been realised by Carl & Josh these last few weeks and we couldn't be more pleased with the effect. We'd like to make a special mention to our mates at The Inner West Tool Library as well for their generous donation which has resulted in new strip heaters for the patio roof. They sure are toasty! In what would be a true return to pre-pandemic form the PBC is considering re-opening on Wednesday nights! Huzzah! But we need your help. What kind of nights/events would you like to see run? Any ideas welcome! Email Hayley at bookings@thepbc.org.au and let us know your thoughts. Lastly, we are thrilled to be selected for the AusGov Office for the Arts Live Music Australia program funding. We've got big plans to upgrade our green room PA system and give you a whole new listening and performing experience. PBC History This Month On Friday June 18, 1915's edition of The Daily Telegraph it was reported that "on Wednesday evening last, the Petersham Bowling Club held a successful euchre tournament in aid of the Petersham branch of the Red Cross Society's Fund for Australian Soldiers". There were over 100 players in attendance, with Mrs Rugg winning first place in the ladies tournament. At the end of the game an auction was also held, and "more than £50 was raised as a result of the function." That's around $5.143 pounds worth today! Well done all! READERS - Books and Conversationswith Ali Whitelock![]() Celebrating books and readers, this is our monthly series of in-depth and relaxed conversations with authors about their latest work, and their body of work, their writing process and the ideas that inspire them. Michaela Kalowski is an interviewer, moderator and curator for writers and ideas festivals. Highlight interviews include Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell, Michelle de Kretser, Amos Oz, Stan Grant, Holly Ringland & Etgar Keret. She's the curator of ABC RN’s on-air writers festival, Big Weekend of Books, now in its 4th year. In 2022 she was curator of International Author events for Brisbane Writers Festival. Michaela has conducted radio interviews for ABC RN’s The Music Show, Big Ideas & The Bookshelf, ABC Classic and has presented programs across ABC radio. July's featured author: Ali Whitelock Ali Whitelock is a Scottish poet and writer living on the south coast of Sydney with her French chain smoking husband. Her recently released 'a brief letter to the sea about a couple of things' is her third poetry collection. Previous collections include, 'and my heart crumples like a coke can' and 'the lactic acid in the calves of your despair' (long-listed for the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal in 2021). Her memoir, 'poking seaweed with a stick and running away from the smell' was launched at Sydney Writers Festival and published to critical acclaim in Australia and in the UK. In a collection where things start innocently enough with an ovarian cyst, and where the poet wakes from dreams of sex in Bunnings (in the light bulb aisle if you're wondering), these poems crash land into your soup bowl leaving your fresh white dress drenched in Campbell's cream of tomato. Ali Whitelock's poems, bold and loud and heartbreaking, run bare-arsed through the shit storm of this world while playing Rachmaninoff's fifth on a piano left out in the rain. They howl and they ache, they hoot and they pine, they curl up with the sea urchins, sing to the starfish, waltz with the seahorses - they sleep with the moon. 'If packing for the apocalypse, include a brief letter to the sea about a couple of things.' Dr Tamryn Bennett, ICAROS ‘This is poetry that dances where it chooses, and dares you to dance with it.’ Magi Gibson, Wild Women of a Certain Age ‘While most poets write like they’re alive not to die, Ali Whitelock pleads for a poem that gives zero fucks–– then rip-writes a bonfire of them.’ Darby Hudson, Confetti Tornado Tickets are $10.00 + BF on sale now via Humanitix Petersham Bowling Club is honoured to present these events for our community and would like to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of this land we meet on and pay our respects to the Elders both past, present and emerging. The Golden Gaytimes 'I'm Tempted' Our July featured readMotherless and anchorless, Silver is taken in by the timeless Mr Pew, keeper of the Cape Wrath lighthouse. Pew tells Silver ancient tales of longing and rootlessness, of ties that bind of slippages that occur throughout every life. One life, Babel Dark's, a nineteenth-century clergyman, opens like a map that Silver must follow. Caught in her own particular darkness, she embarks on an Ulyssean sift through the stories we tell ourselves, stories of love and loss, of passion and longing, stories of unending journeys that move through places and times and the bleak finality of the shores of betrayal.
