New Development Policy

On Tuesday 8 August Australia's first international development policy in a decade was released. The policy commits to "improve the integration of development with other tools of statecraft, including through whole-of-government governance structures". This aligns with AP4D's submission, which recommended development "link with other arms of statecraft, ideally as part of an integrated framework".

Commentary on the new policy from AP4D Advisory Group and staff include:

  • Co-chair Marc Purcell on putting development at the heart of foreign policy.
  • Co-chair Michael Wesley on the need for a creative development agenda.
  • First impressions by Founding Co-convenors Bridi Rice and Richard Moore.
  • Executive Director Melissa Conley Tyler on the policy's whole-of-nation vision and lessons for defence.
  • Editor Grant Wyeth and Co-chair Marc Purcell on development and foreign policy.
  • Program Lead Hugh Piper on the case for releasing DFAT's diplomatic capability review.

Lives and Livelihoods: Improving Maritime Safety in the Pacific

Ships and seafaring are fundamental Pacific traditions, but Pacific Island countries have the most expensive shipping, the longest transport routes, and often the oldest and least energy efficient ships globally. Tragically, the region also experiences the highest per capita fatality rate in the world from maritime incidents. Join us on Wednesday 30 August 2:00-3:00pm (AEST) for the launch of a paper that outlines pathways for how Australia can partner with the Pacific to strengthen regional maritime safety.

Partnering for Infrastructure with Southeast Asia and the Pacific

Australia has a compelling interest in seeing strong growth and prosperity in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, of which infrastructure is a vital enabler. Join us on Friday 8 September 1:00-2:00pm (AEST) for the launch of a paper that sets out the perspectives of Australia’s international policy communities on infrastructure, identifies key risks and opportunities, and outlines a set of high-level principles for partnering with the region.
