NEWS UPDATE

23 August 2024

Publishers note

Last week, I nominated a few of the family names behind the Australian boat-building community. Knowing that I might miss some, I put out a call asking who I had missed. The responses I received included Archie and Barry Spooner - Caribbean & Bertram, Xavier West - Malibu Boats built in Australia, David Telling - Flightcraft, Rob Cumming - Northbank, and one I didn’t know about, John Muir Snr from Tassie. I am sure there are many more, and it may well be time that we at Marine Business News start to build a register of this history, for history’s sake. Please keep sending any more through; I look forward to working out how to best put the list together.

I’m not sure why, but I have been more touched than I expected by the unfolding story in the south of Italy concerning the doomed superyacht Bayesian. Lives were sadly lost in what will no doubt be an intriguing investigation, hopefully with an outcome that will educate our industry internationally and help us all learn what can we do further to help avoid such tragedies in the future.

At the time of writing, a couple of days remain on the schedule for Hamilton Island Race Week. Best wishes to all those participating in the final days. Everyone must be having fun, as reports indicate that no one is answering their mobile phones. Don’t worry; it can wait until next week.

Why are Marinas Important?

The marina industry in Australia incorporates approximately 291 commercial marinas, yacht clubs and boatyards. “This is such a good news story, and it’s one that needs to be widely shared…

I’ve said it many, many times before, and I’ll keep right on saying it: Genuine, committed anglers must, by definition, also be passionate conservationists. Not “lock-it-up-and-throw-the-key-away” preservationists, nor ideologically-motivated green activists with a political barrow to push, but rather real conservationists.

“Being a teenager in the ’80’s I thought it’d be cool to go “Ghostbusting”

In Stephen Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, there’s a powerful anecdote about love as an action rather than a feeling. Covey tells the story of a man who felt stuck in a loveless marriage. The man didn’t know what to do, but Covey’s advice was straightforward: to love her anyway.
