The Jim McNaughton/TileStyle Perpetual Award for Best Commissioning Practice recognises a business or organisation that has demonstrated excellence in commissioning an artist in any artform.

Shortlisted projects show a transparent and well-managed process, fair remuneration, clear communication and meaningful artist engagement from concept to completion. They also demonstrate a strong commitment to artistic integrity and the creation of high-quality work.

Created in honour of Jim McNaughton, a tireless champion of the arts, the perpetual award is crafted by sculptor Jason Ellis.

Sample-Studios, Fleetwood Paints and Cork Opera House: Illuminating the Archives

To mark Cork Opera House’s 170th anniversary, Fleetwood Paints, Cork Opera House and Sample-Studios commissioned Sophie Longwill to create Illuminating the Archives, a permanent installation of 170 hand-painted fused-glass pieces inspired by stories and archival material gathered through community engagement.

The work was selected through an open competition supported by independent artistic oversight, a rigorous assessment process and clear creative freedom for the artist. Installed in a prominent public space, it connects Cork Opera House’s heritage with contemporary audiences.

Irish Life and James Earley: Life in Threes

As part of the redevelopment of its Dublin headquarters, Irish Life commissioned James Earley to create 'Life in Threes', a permanent artwork spanning a 170-square-metre wall and surrounding lightwells in the central atrium.

Five artists received paid concept fees, with the final commission selected unanimously by a panel representing Irish Life, Business to Arts, the project architects and independent artistic expertise. The completed work transforms the space through colour, light and sculptural form, creating a lasting focal point for staff, clients and visitors.

Ipsos B&A and Graphic Studio Dublin: Ipsos B&A Art Collection

For more than 35 years, Ipsos B&A and Graphic Studio Dublin have commissioned an annual limited-edition fine art print, supporting artists while bringing contemporary printmaking to wider audiences. In 2025, Clare Henderson created a series of aquatint prints inspired by Connemara.

Artists are selected collaboratively and work with Graphic Studio Dublin’s master printers, with fair remuneration and creative freedom built into the process. The partnership also supports specialist printers, strengthens Ipsos B&A’s stakeholder relationships and advances Graphic Studio Dublin’s commitment to printmaking.

This year’s shortlist reflects the lasting impact that can be achieved when artists and commissioners work together with trust, clarity and shared ambition.
