My name is James Pawelski, founding director of the Humanities and Human Flourishing Project (HHF) at the University of Pennsylvania. Visual art, music, movies, literature, theater, history, religion, philosophy, and other cultural forms play a central role in human flourishing across the lifespan and around the world. The mission of HHF is to understand, assess, and advance the well-being benefits of engagement in these cultural pursuits. Launched in 2014, HHF consists of a core team at the University of Pennsylvania and a growing, international network of arts and humanities scholars, scientific researchers, creative practitioners, educators, wellness officers, policy experts, members of government, and leaders of cultural organizations. Together, we seek to understand the nature of human flourishing more deeply, investigate its causes and correlates more broadly, and support its cultivation more effectively. You can find out more about our work at www.humanitiesandhumanflourishing.org, where you will also find an archive of any of our newsletters you may have missed. The HHF Newsletter is designed to share with you some of the results of our efforts, make you aware of relevant work being done by others, and give you a sense of how you might contribute to this research and/or apply it in your own domain. It is designed for researchers, professionals, and members of the general public who are interested in understanding, assessing, and advancing the role of the arts and humanities in individual and collective human flourishing. We welcome your thoughts, feedback, and suggestions. Please send them to us at hhf-project@sas.upenn.edu. In the meantime, thanks for joining us, and welcome to the HHF community! Sincerely, James Pawelski Want to learn more about the Humanities and Human Flourishing Project? |
